Scope for a varmint rifle (pointers please)
The other day i received a lot of good information on purchasing a varmint rifle. Today i realise i have no idea what type of optics to put on it. Soooooo... The gun i have decided on is a ruger m77 mkll in .223. I went with the .223 because i want to shoot it a lot and not be detered by the cost of the ammunition. The gun will cost just over $500 and i'm wanting to spend between $250 and $500 on the scope. Any suggestions will be welcome.

Your budget sounds like you understand the price range. Have you thought thru what kind of retical and foucusing you want? A Burris
4x12x40 with their ballistic plex retical and the rear european style focus wouldn't be bad. AO is a pain in the field, some of the third knob scopes might be a possibility, Leupold long range would be the ticket there, I think?0 -
For $500 and down, the Burris signature with target turrets and/or bal.mil.dot reticle can be quite handy but the elevation is limited in the signature series. Keep that in mind if you are wishing to "click" to your target much past 400yds.
A used 6.5-20 or 8.5-25 leupold would be a good choice as well.
Also,..take a good hard look at the Super Sniper scopes from SWFA and read their reviews. they lack the variable power, but are supposed to be very good performers.
Other than those,..I'd be looking at the IOR Valdada (MP8 reticle), or Nightforce scopes (R2 or IRR reticle) which far exceed that price range.

Burris has a deal going now if you buy a 4x12x40 they will throw in a spotting scope for free, I think the works was $395 or so? Once again though my favorite is Leupold, you can't go wrong with either. 0 -
I have a 6-18X50 on mine, 6X for coyotes and up to 18X for prairie dogs depending on conditions. The 50mm objective is for better vision in low light condition. With an objective this large, a shade is a requirement in bright conditions. You get a lot of flare.

not to sound like a tightass, but i've always been pleased with simmons scopes, never had to spend the big bucks and i've never had any complaints from any of the scopes that i've owned, i just bought a 22-250 for long range varmints, i went with a bsa 8-32x50mm for 110 bucks to my doorstep, i buddy of mine has the same scope on his 7mm rem ultra mag, if it can handle the pounding for the ultra mag, than it'll handle any handloads i send through the 22-250, i have a 6-20x44mm simmons on my 25-06 and it was only a buck and a half to my doorstep 0 -
I 2nd JustC's advice on the Super Sniper. If you dont mind a fix powered 20X for varmit than that is the route to go. 30mm Tube and target knobs with enough clicks to get you out pass 400 for sure. 399.00 brand new from www.riflescopes.com

You don't say the varmints your shooting. if your calling dogs and fox with shots 100 and under you need a lower power like a 2.5-10 or 3-9 a fixed objective would work in this application. though I'm a AO fanatic. for a longer range with smaller targets like gh and crow a 6-24 with adj obj. the weaver v series seem to get good reviews as do the bushnells' buris's and of course the leopolds I'd get one of each 3-9 and 6-24. with a little research you shotld be able to keep in the price range for both. ps what made you decide on the ruger? the sporter barrel most likely won't give you the accuracy you want if your going to be shooting longer ranges. a heavy barrel varmint rifle like the savage 12 vbss would be a much wiser choice. about $570. still leaving you plenty for a good scope. 0 -

Here's one you may really like to try. A Springfield Armory with graduated bullet drop compensation out to 700m. The one for the .223 is around 300 bucks (or less depending on seller) and is tuned for 69 gr. loads @ 3000fps. I have one each in 6 X 40 and 4-14 X 56. With the right loads they are accurate all the way out. I think the optics are as good as any other top name too. -Good luck
