varmit ammo question

I never paid much attention to the threads on here about varmit guns because i never had much interest until now. I'm wanting to fill a gap in my gun cabinet. i'm looking for a fast flat shooting varmit round that is relatively cheap (so i can afford to shoot it alot) I would posibly shoot small game at long range or target shoot. I'm more interested in ammo here as i already have an idea of the type of rifle i want. If you would care to throw in some info on optics i would appreciate that as well. something to match the ammo i'm wanting to use.

    I think you are looking for a good 22-250. Excellent for a small flat shooting varmit round.

    I too am a big fan of the 22/250 as a Varmint rifle, it is my primary coyote and prairie dog gun and everything in between. I don't own a rifle set up for Varmints in .223 but many people really like them too. A .223 will get the job done but if you want to really blow them up or really reach out to get'em go with my favorite 22/250.

    As for optics I have a Burris 4x12x40 on my set-up (22/250) It suits me fine, I know some guys that prefer much higher power than that which in my opinion is fine for target shooting or setting up on a Prairie dog town all day but for a running coyote or quick target acquisition I like what I have, I also really recommend Leupold which I have on almost all my other rifles.

    My favorite is my 22-250. For small varmits at reasonably close range, my M77/.17 is interesting....out to about 150 yards.

    There's really no short answer to this question. Cheap in the gun department translates to something in Savage, Weatherby Vangard, or Howa. All get the job done very well, the edge might be Savage on trigger(accutrigger) and their barrels and looks lately seem to be Howa/Vangard in the Varmint barrel/stock. They both seem to shoot with the best. In caliber the above .22/250 is probably the best tradeoff of components/economy/availablity/"wisely remove" factor(being how many parts there are on the receiving end). The 220 Swift and .204 Ruger MAY be a little flatter, but the higher cost ammo and barrel wear, ect. The .223 the ammo is probably least expensive, but the parts don't fly quite the same on the varmint end. Quite a few have both the .223 and .22/250. Use the .223 for closer stuff, the .22/250 for the long range and "I want to see fur fly" shooting.

    The .223 with a 40 grainer and a good stiff load (mine are 3870 FPS)will reach out pretty darn far. We practice on clay pigeons at 385 yards (the max. distance we can get at my buddies place). The gun is sighted for 200, bullet only drops about 2" at 385 yards. I would be quite comfortable taking 400+ yard shots at praire rats with the .223. It's up to you between .223 and .22-250 (or something else) but the .223 is cheaper for factory ammo and cheaper to load. On the explodin' varmints videos, one guy uses a .22-250, the other has a .223 and you really can't tell the difference; both splatter the rats beyond recognition.

    It's easy to spot liberals-they are the ones who have no assets to protect and need every handout they can get. They have forbeyed themselves ascendence to a productive lifestyle.

    seems there are alot of .223 fans here. granted, the .223 is a decent round however: a 40 grainer is not going to buck the wind at long distances.
    my first choice(if you reload), would be the 6mm rem or 6mmppc. i'm pretty partial to these calibers. the energy in ft#'s is excellent at long range shots.
    my 2nd choice would be the 22-250
    3rd....220-2wift
    4th.....204 ruger
    5th....25-06 if you want overkill!!

    i think the "need for speed" has gotten out of hand in recent years with manufacturers. i see know reason to push a 220 swift over 4,000 fps. its a barrel burner for sure if you do alot of shooting. my recent purchase of the .204 and the .17 caliber have caused me to do less reloading for my 6mmppc due to the great accuracy of the afore mentioned. just my 2cents[:D][;)]
