COMMERCIAL FN MAUSER RIFLE

I HAVE A CUSTOMER WITH THE ABOVE LISTED RIFLE. CUSTOM MADE IN 1947 IN AUSTRIA. 7MM MAUSER, HAS DOUBLE SET TRIGGER, LO SWING SAFETY, EXPRESS SIGHTS. REMOVEABLE CHEEK PIECE ( PART OF THE STOCK ), WETZLAR 10X SCOPE W/QUICK RELEASE MOUNTS, EUROPEIAN SLING AND MOUNTS, BEAUTIFUL HAND CHECKERED WALNUT STOCK AND SLICK SATIN BLUE METAL FINISH. WOOD TO METAL FIT IS UNBELIVABLE. IN THE BEGINNING IT HAD A METAL OR PLASTIC/HORN BUTTPLATE BUT SOME UNKNOWING PERSON REPLACED IT WITH A VERY POORLY FITTED THIN RUBBER RECOIL PAD. MARKED FURSTENFELDBRUCK ROD AND GUN CLUB. THEY DID NOT CUT THE CURVE OUT OF THE BUTT BUT FORMED THE PAD TO THE EXISTING SHAPE. MY QUESTIONS ARE IS THERE A POSSIBILITY THAT SOMEONE HAS AN ORIGONAL STYLE BUTTPLATE THAT I MIGHT AQUIRE AND FIT AND WHAT IS A BALL PARK VALUE ON THIS VERY FINE RIFLE IN ITS PRESENT CONDITION.     you have two possible chances to find a butt plate (slim/none). best is to have a good 'smith fit a new pad/plate. as is you probably have a $500/600 rifle. with a well fitted pad/plate maybe $1000+. I'd guess about $100 to have a good 'smith fix this up.

    After the end of the war in Europe, circa 1945-1950. The economic conditions were so bad, that the G.I.'s through their Rod & Gun Clubs could have a rifle like the one you describe built by a MASTER GUNSMITH for chump change.

    As it's a one of a kind custom job to find a original butt plate would be a matter of sheer luck.

    The value of the rifle itself depends on many factors, the most important being was it a original Commerical Mauser or a 98 K that was Sporterized? It would be best to get a hands-on from a knowledgeable collector and or a HONEST dealer for something like this.

    I would guess the original buttplate was checkered water buffalo horn.
    I would attempt to find a smith who could duplicate this. I don't know if 'Griffin & Howe' are still in business but this is the type of work they did. It will definately be worth the effort to get it duplicated. You will be restoring a work of art.

    I'd suggest that anything that is period correct could be used, like a checkered steel butt plate. They are much easier to come by and if you fit the plate to the rifle and not the other way around you will not detract from the value of the rifle. If you should ever find a checkered horn butt plate you can always upgrade it. Lastly don't take it to the corner gunshop for work! This is a rifle that needs to go to someone who is competent to restore a fine old custom rifles.
