Winchester Model 70 pre-64

I have a Winchester Model 70 and the serial indicates it was bult in 1956. However, it has a plastic buttplate. Was this original in 1956 or was it added. The stock does appear to be original.

    Welcome to the forum. The hard rubber butt plate started in 1959 with quite a few of the receivers made in 1958 assembled with the "plastic" butt plate. You could have a rifle that was built in 1958 or 1959 on a 1956 action. This is not all that uncommon. It could also be restocked. You might want to take the stock off to check for any markings. If the factory restocked it it will be marked. Hope this helps.
