Winchester Model 70 .270

I've inherited a nice looking Model 70, serial number G975572. There's some very nice checker work on the stock and it's mounted with a Redfield 1" Tube. 1. Can anyone estimate the age of the rifle through its serial number? 2. Is there any way of telling whether the rifle has a custom stock or whether it is a standard factory job? Any help gratefully received.

    I have a slightly used winchester model 70 .270 rifle. It has had less than a 20 rounds fired. I was in search of someone that might be able to give me a value on it.

    The condition of the rifle is like new (99 of 100 points).

    I beleive it is only a couple years old.

    the G indicates it's a later model 70. If it is one of the newer classic models that has the non-rotating extractor, these have more value than the enclosed boltface models. Check the checkering and determine if it is pressed or actually cut- the cut holding value better.

    As stated previously, the action on your rifle was made in 1971.
    However, there were some controlled round feed (Mauser type extractor)
    actions built during this period which were not assembled into rifles.
    These were assembled during the 1980s with better than average wood & cut checkering. All of these rifles have 6 digit serial numbers.
    If your rifle has an oil finished stock or pressed checkering, it is not one of these rifles. If it is a gloss urethane finish and cut checkering with the Mauser (pre 64) extractor, it probably is.
    The special production rifles also have a bright blue finish.
    This configuration is also found on the Custom Shop rifles.
    If you could post pictures, I could probably tell you which production
    it is.

    Thanks one and all for the input. I didn't expect such a speedy response. As the rifle is inherited, I would never part with it for all the tea in China. Anyway, at least here in the States I can own and enjoy my firearms. Back home, nanny knows best and only the criminals are allowed guns. [:(]
