Need help putting my Savage 111 back together!!!
I have a Savage 111, had to replace the fixed (non removable) magazine. The old one came out with little effort, but I cant get the new one in. On either side of the magazine, there is a piece of metal that sticks out, that is supposed to fit into two slots on the receiver. Problem is, I can only get one in at a time, the other one protrudes. It appears to me, that I have to twist the magazine to slide it in the slot sideways. OR, and this is what I think-place the one piece in the slot, and then push the other side downward until it pops in. One of the slots is rounded, so it leads me to believe that I should push down until it goes in. I cant push it in with my bare hands. Should I use a punch? Or am I totally in left field on this????

I put the magazine in a vise and squished it till it would pop into place. The tolerances there are not exact and some fitting may actually be required, but a tight fit is necessary to keep the mag from popping lose under recoil (found out hard way).
