Anybody know of H.J Sites
I have a .243 custom made rifle initialed maker is H.J. Sites, nice weapon, good fit and finish, pretty wood, good shooter. Anyone have any info on "H.J.Sites"?

Howard Sites was a gunsmith in Covington Va. he died in 1983 or 1984, my memory is not as clear as it should be, he had some national fame as a rifle builder, his specialty was short heavy barrels on Mauser actions, he preferred the Mexican actions, he liked to cut the heavy Douglas barrel to twenty inches, taper the barrel back to the forend tip and then flute the barrel back to within inches of the receiver, he used a high sheen oil finish and a bright blue, roll over cheek pieces on Monte Carlo style stocks, his rifles became popular with pilots that flew into Canada to hunt,they liked the compactness and the accuracy of his rifles, Mr.Sites was well known here in the area and his rifles sell very well, the last one I seen sell brought in excess of $1,000.... he was a friend, and his death by cancer was sad and disturbing.....my last memory of him is holding him erect while he suffered the effects of chemo-therapy, as I said...sad and disturbing.3 -

I since from your response that he was indeed your friend.
The best I can do is keep this info with the rifle and continue his legacy to the next generation. Guns have a way of connecting people, history and time together.

A howard sites rifle in 264 win mag got traded into a local gun shop here in covington a little over a year ago. The shop owner slapped a price tag of $6000 on it and it sold the next day for that price. These are highly prized items in our area.
