Maybe you should take a look at a Springfield Armory GI Model 1911A1. They are justa basic, no frills .45, but are super reliabel, and high quality. They are also around 400-450 dollars.

I have a carbine upper like that with a Springfield milspec, and it's one of the most fun things I shoot. Very reliable.

    Si vis Pacem, Para bellum

i would def go with the mil spec but get the the "MIL SPEC" not the GI model. it is basicaly the same exept there are a few reliabiity enhancements.

I bought one of these at a show in Reno 2 years ago.
Price was $175 + $15 for the stock spacer.
I sold it because it's illegal to own in California with the 1911 frame attached.
I may have the dealer's name somewhere if you're interested.

Very nice carbine. And very accurate!!!!!

You can use any 1911 frame you have, just make sure it does not have a "ramp cut" like the Para has. I have a great competition set-up with my Para, pound and a half crisp trigger, "high capacity" magazines etc., but only works as a single shot, because the rounds will jam against the frame's ramp cut below the barrel.

It would be nice if they offered this conversion kit with ramped barrels.
