If the departments can afford it, they usually buy custom 308's based on Remington 700 action. These run in the $4000 range. I have a friend who is a swat sniper and he also has a Barrett 50 cal bolt action that he bought with his own money. The right optics run in the $2000 range. 0 -
As Peary said, it depends on the dept and their budget. Some just shoot stock Rem PSS with good optics. High speed teams will have the more "cooler" rifles such as Blasers, AI, Remington M40 SWS, or custom built ones if they can get that approved. You won't see too many custom guns due to liability issues. If something bad does go down a dept would want a company with deep pockets to cover the law suit if it was weapon related failure. 0 -
so a rem. 700 in .308 huh? ill have to check them out,..i have a dragunov already and im thinking i would like to have its american counterpart 0 -

Got a Remington 700PSS 308 with Millet 3.5x24x50mm scope last month for my birthday. Same as what my boss has.
Expect 3/8"groups @ 100m with the high dollar ammo.
It neater than hell...
Also own a AR50 50bmg, with quality ammo expect 1-2"gropus @ 300
@ 500 expect 4-5"groups at 1000m I get 8-10"groups.
But the concussion from the muzzle blast (no recoil!) is killer.

Clone,
Do post your results of a 5 shot group at 100yards with a bone stock PSS please.
I have a debate going on this other forum about Rem 700PSS bone stock vs a Savage 10FP bone stock.
Honestly, I have never seen a bone stock 700PSS shoot 1/2MOA 5 shot group out of the box. Meaning no new trigger, no rebarreling or any type of smithing.
Also curious what your AR 50 does. I am also in the process of helping a buddy work up a load for his Barrett. Using Hornady AMAX 750s, what kind of ammo you using to get MOA at 1000?0 -
I have gone 1/2moa for 5 shots with the rem700 LTR in 308 with remington premier 165gr NBT's with nothing but a trigger job.
My pard who is a Sgt. and head of the swat teams uses all rem700LTR rifles in 308 with federal gold medal match ammunition and leupold 3.5-10x40 tacticals. No liability on the dept that way.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
Got Balistics?0 -
ContacFront - I dont keep targets hanging around.
And it was 3 shoots in the group, the 1st 2 shots were to spot the scope in. Total of 5 shots on the gun as of now.
Looked at the Savage before the Remington, the Remington seemed to have better fit, finnish & chambering action.
Plus my boss owns one as well as 1 other guy in the shop, neither one of these Remingtons have had any work done other than each of us setting up our own trigers.
Otherwise all 3 are bone stock straight out of the box.
Rounds/bullets were Hornaby Target Moly coated 168gr hpbt's as they came in the box.
The boss's gun at 300m groups 2-3" consistantly.
On the AR50, I have a guy in EL Reno OK. that reloads mine with 690gr FMJ's, dont know the charge or type of powder he uses. But he charges me $1.85 each when buying in 100 lots. $1.50ea for 500 lots.
He makes all the 50bmg shoots in the Midwest hawking his ammo.
I can get more info on him if you need to buy some of his ammo.

I am ok on the 50 stuff. Buddy wants to work up a load using match grade bullets from Hornady.
On the PSS however thats not bad 1MOA at 300. And yes I will agree that the PSS are better out of the box as far as the stock goes but you can order a Savage with a SWEEEEET McMillan A3 stock for 755.00, my Savage yeilds 1/2MOA or better at 300yards. Bone stock out of the box shooting 175gn SMK hand loads.
Try 175s through that PSS and see if you can get it under 1MOA at 300. A lot of the guys I know are shooting that in their PSS.0
