Best surplus Mauser to buy?
Alright, I'm looking for a few surplus mauser to buy. I am applying for a gunsmith school in Pittsburg, and I want a few actions that won't break the bank. I want them just to build into deer rifles, not match. Which ones should I be looking at? Will be used mainly for short and long action calibers like .270, .30-06,. .308 and the such. Nothing magnum. For a German Mauser, check AIM Surplus. They had a bunch a few months ago; they even had some with the Nazi markings ground off at a really low price. A good company to deal with.

German too expensive and collectable to destroy.
Turkish Model 38 K.kale - Cheap, newer receiver able to handle modern loads, straight bolt handle though
Yugo M48A- same as above, with bent bolt handle
Yugo M24/47- little more expensive but good action to work with

The best action for the money in the standard m98 is the vz24. The turk m38 is cheaper and there are some in really good shape but they have several areas that are not the same dimension as the standard m98. The turk has different barrel shank diameters within the same model. I guess if you want to learn the turks might provide a varied education.

As they should still be plentiful any Burno made action is top of my list. Second, the 1903 Turk, the ones with the extra high stripper guide, I believe were all German made and exported to Turkey. It is the intermediate length action which works well with the .308 case length and such. Actions with all matching numbers are hands down the best, but hare to find. So as to not break the bank root around and look for stripped receivers. They can often be had for $10 to $20 per, depending maker. Needless to say any prewar action/reciever will probably be of a better grade to customize then a war time action. 0 -
My preference at the moment would be a K-98~M48 Serbian Mauser - crest is dated 1943: In military-new condition; collector's grade @$299. The service-grade start at $149.

It's a pretty nice deal - nice Mauser - well maintained. One of my grown God-sons (a fire Captain in Ocala - serious Mauser collector) in FL has one and loves it. I'm buying one myself.

The best is clearly the Swedish Mauser in 6.5 X 55. Accurate, the recoil of a .243 with the ballistics of a .270. These guns are also in prime condition and well taken care of.

Ditto on the VZ-24. They are high quality and most of the ones on the market are pre-war. If you go K-98 look for an early or prewar dated on as the work on the late war models is not as good in many cases and the action won't work as smooth. There is just no substitute for the M-98 action. The Swedish mausers are beautifuly made and very high quaility, but thaey just don't have all the improvements incorporated into the 98 action. If you're looking for the best among the best, my choice would be the M1909 Argentine action as manufatured by DWM. Extremely nice pre-WWI craftmenship and some sporting rifle features like the magazine release. Good luck and let us know how it comes out

You can get a brand new Yugo M-48 for $150 or under. The actions may be a little rough but the accuracy is super. 0 -
For a starter project you might check out Sarco for an action. They have some in fair to good shape needing smoothing of pits,etc. at a bargain price. That would be good experience without the concern of messing up a quality piece.
