Savage 99E Series A

Will try one more time -- took in a 99E, Series A, that has a serial # not in standard format. # is stamped on the left side of the receiver and has the prefix "RD" with a three digit suffix. the barrel is stamped with the same three digits (but apparently transposed) under the forearm. Rifle is supposedly an R&D piece so this may be why I can't find anything on it (spoke to Douglas Murray and he couldn't offer any help -- a very nice fellow, though). The finish on the rifle is excellent and it doesn't look like it was fired much at all. The butt and forearm were covered with a sort of brown plastic finish that was very thick and beginning to crack; I stripped the finish and the buttstock is a pretty decent piece of walnut, the forearm not anything too good. Any help or direction is appreciated. Thanks

    I have taken in a 99E Series A that has the serial number RD532 on the frame and a "transposed" RD523 on the barrel. Any info on production date etc would be appreciated. Thanks.

    I cannot get to the books until tonight, but as far as I can tell, that is not a valid serial number (either of them) for a Savage Model 99.

    Serial number-date of manufacture are only available up to about 1952.

    When I can get to the books, I will see what I can find if you get no more helpful responses by tonight. I don't think anyone can give you a date of manufacture past about 1952, but may be able to at least give you a bracket of the years that model was made.

    I have been told that this might be an R&D or sample piece from the 70's. Barrel has 523 (no RD) stamped on bottom at receiver. Caliber is .300.

    The E (economy) was introduced in 1960 and discontinued in 1984. Serial numbers commenced at about 1,000,000. It was cataloged as the "Savage 300." and offered in .250-3000 (the one I want) and .300 Savage. Pistol grip is uncapped and the butt plate is hard rubber, no checkering . In 1961 .243, .308, wer added with a 20" barrel. The .300 Savage had a 24" barrel. In 1962 all calibers had a 20" barrel only. In 1971 a scope gun was added in .243 and .308, and in 1983 .250 Savages was added again. In 1966 impressed checkering was added. In 1981 a Monte Carlos stock with fancier design checkering was introduced. Original forend was schnabeled, but in 1961 it went to a rounded tip. Safety is the older style at the side of the lever loop. No indicator on left side. Rotor is plated steel and cocking indicator is gold plated. In 1981 rotor switched to brass color and in the following years steel colored.

    This one has a 22" barrel and the safety at the side of the lever loop. Stock is pistol grip, uncapped, has impressed checkering and a rounded forend. Cocking indicator is gold plated and there is no indicator. It appears all original and there is no indication of serial number being changed -- this actually may have been a sample or R&D gun...

    I guess that is why we are here 300. Stick around, it sounds like you have a good idea of what you are doing and we can use all of that we can get. Sounds like an interesting rifle. I will e-mail some additional thoughts.
