1959 Remington 280 value?

My brother-in-law is inheriting a 1959 Remington 280 semi-automatic rifle. It is supposed to be very excellent condition. though neither of us have seen it or have any additional information about it. He's been told that it is "very collectable". What should he look for in terms of further ID of this rifle and what might it be worth? I Thank you in advance to all who reply.

  if it is a rem. automatic from 1959 in .280 cal then it is a m-740, not many collect these. the .280 is not one of the 'rare' calibers (.257, .244). value would be from $200 (used for hunting, 80 finish remaining) to $500/600 for one near new.
