Where can I find new M1 barrels? Mark C.?

I have a Springfield M1 that is a rack grade, the barrel is shot out. Where is the best place to get a CORRECT replacement barrel? What is the usual price for one as well. I have a person who can rebarrel it at a reasonable price but need to know where to find one.

On another note, I have one that has been welded up for a drill rifle, is there a market for these and if so what do they bring? I know that the ones that were used for this usually had bad receivers and barrels. Most parts in it are not the best or so I have been told. Is that correct?

    mark christian, to be honest the thought of restoring crossed my mind BUT what you told me was what I figured would be the problem, money! What I really want to do, since restoring is out, is a good quality barrrel to make it a good shooter. In other words what do you reccomend as to quality after market barrels? Who is the best source of them as well? I appreciate any info you have and can give me. Thanks.

    As a general rule, drill rifles are not safe to shoot under any circumstances. They have been "dewatted" by different people & by different means. ALL were sold with the caveat that they are not shootable. There may be some gunsmiths willing to work on one & capable of making it into a safe, reliable shooting weapon; however, anyone else attempting to "restore" one risks injury or death. If you want a rifle that can be shot, then you should buy a rifle that can be shot.

    nmyers, as to th drill rifle, no way I am even wanting to get available to shoot. A friend of mine is retired military armoror and he told me when they welded one for dril, the reciever was bad and the barrel was bad, so bad neither could be used again. I just wondered if there was a market for them as wall hangers. I inherieted this one with no place for it. I was going to give it to my nephew to use as a practice drill rifle in ROTC in High School, but they use 03s so I gave him one of my 03s. The only parts that can be used are the trigger group, sights, furniture, and gas plug. I might just keep it for the extra parts.

    Sorry, I made a bad assumption. Yes, there IS a market for drill rifles (mostly 03's & 03A3's), & CMP has sold them for several years. As you stated, they should all have been made from "unclassified, unserviceable" rifles. However, as many were obsolete, I suspect that some rifles converted to "drill" were still quite serviceable. Value is minimal, although collectors can sometimes score valuable stocks from them.

    The real problem is that folks sometimes buy them with the intention of grinding off the welds, & shooting them. That could be dangerous.

    I like your idea of recycling the parts. Check them carefully, as you might have some parts that will bring big money at auction.

    Find out if a local veteran's group would like the M-1 as a wall hanger. Donate it and take a tax deduction. [:D]
