Budget Rifle

Im want to make or buy a rifle new or used for elk and deer for $500. I want it to have a bi pod, sling and scope.any ideas??

    If you want new then you should probably take a look at one of the Savage rifle packages which include most of the items you want. These packages should be inexpensive enough to allow for the purchase of a Harris bi pod but if not you can always use one of the $10 bipods for an AR and just snap in on and off the barrel.

    Savage is a good choice. So is a Remington 700. Also a Weatherby Vangard can be obtained for under $500.00.

    The Weatherby is a good choice because these are made with Howa barrels and Weatherby guarantees (in writing) that the rifle will group no more than 1.5 inches at 100 yards. Comes with an adjustable trigger just as the Savages do now.

    With any of the above rifles you can't go wrong. Not only that but you can get any of them at your local Wal-Mart. If they don't have it in stock they can order it. Just ask to look at their catalog.

    You don't need a bi-pod for elk hunting. It won't help. Too slow and heavy to lug around. Game does not wait for you to set yourself up with a bipod and they add weight to your rifle.
    For deer and elk, buy a .270 and up. You're looking at a used rifle for $500. No big deal. Pop into your local gun shop. Any scoped bolt action rifle in a suitable calibre will do.
    However, you must also be able to shoot said rifle, standing. Sight in with the ammo you intend to hunt with, then practice. Practice shooting, once you have found the most accurate ammo for your rifle, standing, at 100 yards, using a 9" pie plate as a target. When you can hit said pie plate every time, you're ready to hunt. Use a rest when you can, but game doesn't always let you. But be ready to shoot accurately with no rest.
    No offense, but if you can't or won't practice shooting until you're good enough, please stay home.

    This is a good time of year to look for used hunting rifle outfits. I found my elk rifle, a Ruger "all weather" M-77 stainless in .338 Win magnum caliber, with a good scope for $375 in a pawn shop. A friend bought a nice used Weatherby Vanguard in 7 mm Rem.Magnum with a Leupold scope for under $400. Take your time and look a lot. I'm sure you'll find something you like at a good price. I'd start with a .270 or a 30-06 unless you have a lot of experience shooting. The kick of the magnum thirty calibers and larger makes them hard to shoot accurately unless you are comfortable with them. Good luck and good hunting.

    All the above plus the gun shows and gun shops. All have some really nice stuff showing up this time of year. A lot of guys just have to have the newest ray gun out there. The 30-06 and 300 win mag, the 7mm Rem and .270, and some even feel the .25-06 is plenty enough. They worked plenty good up to now and have dumped over lots of critters. The 30-06 and .270 are everywhere, as is ammo in many flavors. The Howa (read Vanguard also) and Savage are, like others have said, the most bang for the buck.

    SAVAGE has brought back the STEVENS name and is introducing a new line of long and short action bolt action rifles for the shooter / hunter on a budget. i have not yet handled one, but all the trade magazines and industry mailers indicate that its a high quality / basic-plain / well made gun. its listed and described in the new SAVAGE catalog.
