$450 for just the gun or is that for the scope too?
If it were me, I'd buy a Tikka. Forget the 710, and the supershadow 70 is really heavy(good at the range, bad in the woods).

Go to the auction sight right here. Under Rifles, Bolt action, do a search for Savage. Many will be new. That new trigger is SWEEET!!

Most used ones will be without the new 'Accu-trigger'...that is what you want. Accu-trigger went into production in, 2004, I think???

Savage rifles are accurate to begin with. The new trigger makes it easier for you, the shooter, to perform a good pull on the trigger. It is worth the wait for an Accu-trigger on a Savage in the caliber you desire.

Caliber: no med to big game hunting?...223 remington as there is plenty of surplus ammo. military's 5.56

Hunting: 308 Win. good up through Elk (practice, shorter ranges) and plenty of surplus ammo. Military's 7.62x59 ( Did I get that length right guys???)

If either the gun or the scope are junk so will be the shots. You ask about inexpensive ammo and deer hunting. This translates to the .308win to me. Cheap plinking surplus ammo is readily available. Come hunting time, buy a box of the good stuff and have at it. Around here Savage offers a "package" deal, rifle and scope for about $400. Look around the net and you might be able to find one. Another thought, pick up a good military mauser that has been sproterized. They are offered on the auction site regularly for $150 to $300. 8x57mauser does for deer just fine.

There is an excellent Tikka in 6.5 X 55 for sale in HERE (Gun Broker). In my opinion, it is an IDEAL deer rifle. Good price too!
