    Go for the 3.5" upper!
    Most common are the 10 & 7.5"
Only problem I have found is the buffer springs, sometimes you have to play with them to get everything perfect.
Just about everybody & their dog's sell short uppers.

    try bushmaster, armalite.

It is better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

"Some regulatory concerns"? Now there is an understatement! Actually I'm in the middle of a pistol build. Bushmaster sells a 11 1/2" I believe. I'm building a 10/22 and plan on an AK next. I might do an AR sometime but I all ready have a Carbon 15. The key is that the receiver you are using has to never have been part of a rifle assembly. The AR is no problem - everybody sells new lowers. Ruger won't sell bare receivers so I had to go with finishing a 80%. Same for the AK.

Thanks for the spring tip Walte.

Well, I have a stripped pistol lower. I was considering buying the Bushy Type 97 upper if they are for sale separately. A 7.25" barrel!
[8D] I would hope Bushy would have it tuned to function properly before leaving the factory.

I WOULD consider building an upper for a rifle. But a short-barrel AR upper.... I don't know. I think I'd prefer to leave all the fine 'smithing and tuning to the experts...being a 'gas' action.

    Check out this company:

I just bought one of their complete rifle uppers. It works perfectly no tuning required. Their shipping is super fast and online order tracking system is great!

I can't vouch for their pistol uppers since I don't have one but their rifle uppers are great!!! Price is right too.
