remington 700 243
I have a remington 700 243, it is a 1960 model. The rifle shot very accurate up intil last fall, it went from shooting a one inch group at a 150 yds. too shooting a four inch group now and getting worse all the time. The riffing in the barral look very good and clean. I've put two different scopes on it and is not getting any better. The barral is floated you can run a dollar bill from the end of the stock all the way to the action. Any ideals how to get the rifle too shoot a tight group again?

I would check the crown, if you don't know thats the muzzle end of the barrel. Look for dings or knicks, anything out of the ordinary. 0 -

I would begin by removing the scope and tightning the base screws ,Ive seen them loose and you cant tell it until you torque them . check the action screws ,loosen and retighten properly. clean the barrel and chamber with J & B bore cleaner. If a dollar bill slides under the barrel all the way back to the action it shouldnt be a bedding problem unless the recoil flange and or the recoil shoulder in the stock have gotten out of proper engagement.
If it has two piece bases I have seen one base be loose and you cant tell it by hand feeling of it because the tight one will hold it all seemingly rigid . the vibrations from firing it will cause it to jump around though.
If it is still not grouping after all of this is checked out , then take it to a good gunsmith and have the bore and chamber examined and get his opinion.0 -
I have 243 in the 700 also, The best I can get out of it in around 1" at 100 yard's, Barrel is free floated, Just put some glass bedding about 2" back of the forearm, havent had a chance to try it yet, Likes 85 gr bullets better than the 100 gr. good luck 0 -
yeah could be the scope or scope mount, I doubt it would get that bad that quickly..

I would recommend cleaning the barrel in case you have a fouling problem. I encountered the same problem just recently. I thought I had cleaned my barrel thoroughly, but that was not the case. 0 -
Sounds like either heavy fouling or a scope gone bad.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Every one has some pretty good suggestions, if it were my gun I'd start like this: Check all of your screws, stock to action, scope mounts and rings to the action etc..
Make darn sure you have a proven scope on it.
Clean it better than you've ever cleaned it, if need be try a new bore cleaner and really give it a going over. Use a bore light and look for rough spots.
Check your crown/muzzle for any damage.
Buy some good ammo and go out and shoot it again.
My guess is a it's a scope problem or a loose screw problem or a fouling problem or a cheap ammo problem. ( in that order )...[;)]0
