safe hummidity

I have a 78"x36"x26" safe in my garage, i live in Indiana so there is plenty of wet winter weather in my garage. I had 1 18" golden rod in the safe and i put a humidity detector in the safe and it just stated being very humid outside and the gauge read 58%. I bough another heat rod from browning the same lenght but this one gets hotter, quite a bit hotter in fact. So now i have two heat rods and the humidity is still 52%. is this exceptable? i have a feeling that it is not. will another heat rod really help that much? What about getting that dry descicant?

What do you think is an acceptable percentage, and what would be best? I am thinking about getting a third rod for extra humid times durring the winter or spring. This way i can just turn one off it it isn't nessesarry.

any imput would be appriciated.

    The only way to get it much below that is to move it inside, but that may not help either as 54% is fairly dry at least where I am from.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    That's way too humid for safe storage of guns. It's also too high for dessicant to handle, either. Your garage floor is cement, & acts as a wick for moisture in the ground. Safes aren't sealed, so it's going to be extremely difficult to keep the interior dry in such a humid area.

    I think that you need to move your safe inside the house.

    What about putting somthing under the safe to stop the moisture from traveling from the gound and through the cement and into the safe. It is possible to put down a proctective barrier?

    I have mine on 6X6 Pressure treated. It raises the save up a little to look around inside and has air circulating underneath. Also if the floor gets wet it above any water. (Hopfully)

    I have mine in a basement. It gets pretty damp, but I have put it up on wooden blocks, padded the room in carpet, put tubs of damp rid out in the room, and have a golden rod in the safe. So long as I oil the guns, it is enough. Not ideal, but oh well. For your situation, I would advocate perhaps getting a small space heater for the garage? Just a few extra degrees might make a difference in relative humidity.

    The problem you have is it is located in the garage. You are at the mercy of ambient heat/noheat/high humidity changes as the weather changes. The safe should be inside where the air is conditioned/moderated. You are having to regulate humidity and temperature every time the garage door opens and the safe door opens, even at different times. That is a losing proposition even with golden rods.

    Golden rods work by heating the air. Obvious right? Warmer air, because the molecules are further apart, can carry less water vapor. That said, in areas of the midwest and other areas like where JustC lives very high relative humidities are hard to battle. Added to that is the problem of condensation when the gunmetal is cooler than the air. Best answer is to move the safe into the house, prefereably in the driest area possible, continue to use at least one golden rod, maybe the warmer one, and to be sure your firearms are well oiled (I use a product called "Sheath", Beachwood Casey I think) and use silicone impregnated covers like Borestores. You will find Borestores are cheaper at Cabela's than factory direct or at gunshows. You will need to check on them every month or so, and never, never leave fingerprints on the metal!

    I built a rm. around mine with just enough room for a humidifier. (Sm rm. type) Drilled hole in bsmt. slab (vert sandy sub base) for drain hose. Used visqueen in walls and ceiling and leave the humidifier run 24/7 and it stays @ a constant 30% humidity. The heat from the humidifier really helps. Rm. stays @ around 70 degrees. Good luck.

    Yep................It's been a long day. And yes it is a DEhumidifier.
