Ruger P85 mag question
I bought some factory LEO mags off of gunbroker for my grandads P85 a couple of months ago. I took them when I went to visit last weekend and they didn't fit. They have a plastic floorplate on them where the original mags that came with the gun have a flat metal floorplate on them. The mags won't lock up into the gun without really pushing on the floorplate, and then the slide seems to hang on the mag (I only tried it once and stopped so I wouldn't mess anything up. I figured the mags must have changed at some point). Anyhow, did ruger change the mags and if so, how do you tell what mag fits what gun?

I just check my mags for a P89 and they all have the metal floor plate. Not sure why you new ones are plastic. Do the plates say Ruger on the bottom or does it look like someone changed them?
My gun came with 2 ten round mags and then I found a 15 shot mag for my 9mm, but the mag is for a .40 cal and it works fine.

Mine don't have the holes on the side, they are solid metal. They do say Ruger on the metal of the mag or on the bottom?
Normally the mags come in Ruger Logo packaging.

The P85 is very particular about what mags will fit and feed properly. The ones that work in mine are Ruger and the high quality after-markets but with a little tweeking the others work reasonably well.
The P95 will accept any mag.
Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.0 -
Who makes good quality aftermarket mags and where can I get them? (I know metalform makes good mags for 1911's, but have no idea on ruger mags). Thanks for the replies! 0 -
The mags did change after serial # 304-70000
The hole in the front of the mag is 1/16th of an inch difference.
It will work though with a little extra push.
All FACTORY Ruger mags have holes in them.
The early ones had 3 in the back marked 5,10 and 15 respectivly.
Later there were 4 holes on the side.
There were some aftermarket mags that were stamped RUGER P-85 9mm.
I have a few 30 round mags marked that way.
Ruger never made a 20 or 30 round Mag!

WM69 I have two original P-15 Ruger magazines for sale on GB item # 28773765, both still in the boxes for P-85 serial number 304-69999 and below. VGUN1 0 -
MEC-GAR mags are as good as factory mags (because they are one of the largest factory mag contractors, so most mags they offer are factory mags without stamps) and are quite often a few bucks cheaper than the ruger stamped mags.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Any way to tell if aftermarket mags are for early or late model guns? I called and the # on the gun is in the 302-xxxxx, so I will need the earlier mags (unless the mecgars will work in older guns). Thanks for all the replies. 0 -
