Model 42
I have had this model 42 for about 15 years. It is a 28 inch plain barrel made in 52. all serial numbers match and the blueing is about 92% no pitting just wear around the corners. The wood is original and about 150% . I have made it a habit (probobly bad) of lightly sanding out the surface scratches on the stock or forend after I hunt with it and applying boiled linseed. Does this detract from its value? Also I still have the original box that it came in that is in good shape for its age, how much will this help the value? Thanks T

Hello cartod: Well "fixing the dings" in the stocks, is not a major detraction. Typically your gun will have a value between $850-$1400 if you are accurrate in your grading. However since you have the box, and it"s a 1952 gun, does the box have the large decal on the lid of the Md 42? Do you still have the Owners manual, and Hang tag along with all the factory paperwork that came with it? If your box has the "decal of the 42" it's worth over $400 by itself. ( I sold one with the hang tag and Manual, for $445. last fall) Non decal boxes go in the $200 price range. Since you have both!! I think you might be looking in the range $1250-$1800 range. It really depends on how you market the gun, here at GB or another auction site, a listing site or just locally through the newspaper classifieds. You just don't see Md 42s with there box for sale. Unless you need the money hang onto it, it will continue to rise. For Insurance purposes, I'd value it at $2400. Because the time you spend trying to find another one is valuable too! Thank you for the fast reply Only Winchesters. The Box is Smaller than a normal gun box. It has a picture of a 42 on the front with a description of the gun, it also says light in weight on one side of the big decal and fast smooth action on the other side. On the bottom of the box it has a circle that says bird and sons inc, made in USA and a number I-864B. there is a wax type brown paper in the box that the gun was wraped in but nothing else. can I still get the manual for it? Or should I just leave it alone since it wouldnt be original? no hang tags either. Thanks Todd 0 -
Good afternoon cartod: Well Md 42 paper work is out there, hang tags, manuals etc. There are also reproductions of hang tags and manuals.
