Pistol Scope Recommendations
I am looking for input concerning a pistol hunting rig. I want to use a Taurus Raging Bull 44 Mag with 8 3/8 in barrel. I am looking to use this for whitetail deer at under 75 yards. What scope should I be considering? I was thinking a 1X4 or a 2X6.

Burris makes a great 2x7 pistol scope. Have had one for quite some time and has been mounted on everything from a 44 Mag handgun to a 45-70 rifle. Still works like a champ.

At the distance you want to shoot and if you are doing it off hand, I would use a fixed 2 power. Trying to hold a higher power steady off hand will drive you crazy. The higher powers are fine if you have a rest. I guess I would go with the 1x4 if you want a variable. 0 -
I hunted for a number of years with a Leupold M8-2X on a S&W 629 and later a Colt Anaconda. Worked well for me up to a point. I had a couple of situations where the deer was within 20 yards and at that range the scope is almost worthless. All you can see is brown......
I finally went to a Red dot sight about 10 years ago. Much easier to get on target initially and for follow up shots as necessary.

My hunting handgun is a Smith M29 6" with a Leupold 2x EER on it. I have no complaints on it and it is a good balance of magnificaiton and field of view. 0 -
I agree with the recomendation of the Burris. I own two Burris pistol scopes. One is a 2x and the other the 3-12x variable. I have the 2x on my .308 Encore for deer and the 3-12x on my .223 Encore for prairie dogs. For your application I would recommend the 2x and to stay away from anything more powerful than 4x. On my variable Burris your field of view shrinks drastically past 4x and when you crank up the magnification you your eye relief shortens. The 2x is perfect for 100 yds or less. They are great scopes and have a sharp image and hold their zero, even on the .308. 0 -
I have a Nikon 2-6 variable on my S&W PC 629. I was "snookered" into the variable when about all I need is 2 or 2.5 fixed. Like Pearyw said, longer settings are tough to hold and focus through--at least that's true for me. [8)]

You should always leave a varible scope on it's lowest setting until you have the time to use more power. You may not need the higer power all the time but it sure is handy to have if you ever need it. It then gives you the best of both worlds if you need it.
