remington 740 takedown

HELP! i just got a used 740 today. tried hand cycling some rounds through it. they are not ejecting. it seems to be the extractor but i can't get the dang bolt out to inspect it. how do you strip this rifle down? also, i read in another post that if you have grooves in the top of the receiver from the lugs then the rifle is useless? well, this one has a spot that looks like the lugs made in the receiver. PLEASE HELP! thanks.

    You will need to drop the trigger group, knock the bolt handle pin down with a punch so that you can remove the bolt handle, take the front handguard off and loosen the nut holding the barrel on. I had to take a wrench and spend some time on the bench grinder so it will fit in there.

    I spent alot of time and money on a 742 that died on shot number 3 after I built it up. I would part that rifle out and get a 7400 with the profits if it has ANY bolt impact marks in the receiver.

    Take a moment and do a search on Ask the Experts using the words 742 7400 and the poster name of TWalker. On 11/03/04 he raised the same question and there is my reply as well as others. Hope this helps.

    thanks guys!

    i fired it today and came to the conclusion that the extractor is gone. that is the problem. learned that when it fell into my hand after locking the bolt back. the "chew" marks have zero effect on the functioning of the bolt. guess i got lucky. it is accurate as hell. seems pretty good for only $175. guess i can't complain too much.

    well, time to order that extractor and rivet.

    a local smith said that removing and installing the extractor is a pain in the butt.

    anybody have any words of wisdom concerning this operation?

    anybody ever replaced an extractor?

    THANKS FOR THE OFFER 260. BUT A LOCAL SMITH WAS GOING TO CHARGE ME ABOUT $45. I THOUGHT THAT WAS TOO MUCH. I MAY TRY IT MYSELF. I DO ALOT OF WORK ON MY AK'S AND SAIGAS.
