S&W 586 Question

I recently bought this 4" 586, it is easily 95% and the walnut grips look new. According to friends it was manufactured in 81. I have an ignorance of revolvers and questioning people have made me discover this model was" recalled," something about bushings coming loose and locking up the pistol. Those that have been repaired are marked with an M. This pistol has no such marking.. Should I return the pistol for this repair? Will it affect its value going either way? I have heard this model has appreciated in price and will continue to do so. I paid $250 for it with 2 speed loads and 3 boxes of hydroshocks, and a leather case that I do not keep it in. Well any opinions from the expertson what to do? Did I get a good deal? Any help appreciated. Dandy

    first off you did very well ,
    2nd the 586 is a fine revolver ,
    3rd YES you need to get the rcall done , if I remember right its the firing pin bushing that needs replaced , what happens is when you fire the gun the primer flows (or craters ) back into the fireing pin hole , locking the gun up tight, if you only use this gun for target pactice it would not be to big of deal if it happens , but if you where using this gun to defend yourself and if happen you could end up dead

    Thanks for the quick reply. No this gun will only be used for range fire. I have other guns for defense.. Would this modification alter the value? I will not sell it. I bought it from a friend, just don't wantto mess it up. I heard S&W will pay for shipping coming and going but I would call them first just to make sure.. I enjoy the feel and action of this pistol and am kinda afraid of a new collection starting. "Sigs move over the family, the family's growing again!" Thanks again Gskyhawk. Dandy

    Once it is repaired, I would have no problem using it as a self defense gun. IMHO, this is one of the best revolvers ever made by S&W. I just wish it had of been made with a 2.5" barrel. You are very lucky to get one in the blueing condition this one is in. No, it will not hurt its value in the least because this is a true design recall, not the COCA recall that Ruger did on the old '3-screw' Blackhawk. The Ruger recall and repair did devalue that gun for the SA purists. That was the result of lawyers doing what they do best, 'CYA' and 'COCA'.

    no it shouldn't hurt the value any , if I remember right all they are going to do is replace the bushing with one that has a little smaller hole in it ( its been about 20 years since I had one done ) so forgive me if I'm off a little

    ,, I would think it would hurt the value more by not having it done , that is to any one that knows about the problem anyways, best thing to do is give S&W a call

    Contact S&W, confirm that they are still paying shipping to and from, and get the work done. I'd do it even if I had to split the shipping w/ them. Value of gun is not hurt and you have precluded a possible failure, regardless of today's use ... why have a gun that has a known, easily fixed, failure problem ... you never know what use you may have for it in the future.

    Does any one know what the serial # range was that is affected by thus recall? I a have one of similar age #ABE 21xx, where would the "M" be marked at?

    I remember when they had the recall. it apparently happened with only some brands of ammo. I have a couple of them that I was shooting in PPC events and for every thing else. Never had a problem with anything I was shooting, so I never returned mine. I still have not had a problem with these pistols, but I guess if you a concerned it couldn't hurt if they will still do it.

    I have shot alot of rounds out of mine as well, and cannot find any "M" on it anywhere. No problems related to locking up. Mine is an original 586, no dash, stamped MOD586 under the crane, with an assembly number as well. No "m" Guess I have been lucky so so far.
