Scope recommendations for air rifle

Picked up a 22 cal pellet gun at a local gunshow. One of those Chinese made, flick the lever and the barrel drops for loading, take it all the way down to compress the air.

I have heard that a "conventional" scope for a 22 rifle will not hold up. Anyone verify or vilify this info?

    An air rifle creates force in both forward, and backward motion.A 22 does only the one. I use a bushnell sportsman 3-9X40 on my cz bolts, and cz air rifle.It has an A.O. and target turrets.It is an air rifle scope, and I am very happy with it.

    Hello acheap scope will not hold up under recoil . Most 22rimfire scopes are also set up for 50-100 yards get an airgun scope that will focus at 50 feet

    The replies have hinted but not come out and said...

    BUY A SCOPE MADE FOR AN AIR RIFLE.

    Even very good rifle scopes, can be broken after a few shots from an air rifle. I put a cheap 4x on the rifle I gave my youngest. It has been going on 6 years now with no problems.

    We will most certainly hang separately.

    This is commonly misunderstood. The recoil forces generated by air-guns (whether cocked piston, pneumatic pump, or CO2) are mechanical. This means HARD initial motion and terminal motion (start & stops in the firing action).

    Smokeless powder firearms, even the largest 505 Gibbs or whatever, build recoil forces slowly and it is felt by the shooter ONLY after the bullet exits the muzzle.

    Recoil in airguns is transmitted to (EXPERIENCED BY) the scope in cocking, pumping, and when the air piston stops at it's terminal position. All this happens before the pellet exits the barrel. Yes, there is some recoil upon the pellet's exit from the barrel on all air/CO2 powered guns (not spring powered...those without a piston, ie a Red Ryder). That 'exit' recoil is minor. The mechanical impacts can break the best of scopes built for firearms over a relatively short period.

    The mechanical impacts are similar to hanging the scope by a rope and tapping it with the wooden handle of a hammer. The recoil of a firearm would be more like blowing it around with short & powerful bursts of compressed air....see what I mean???

    Those old Weavers (El Paso, TX) that old gunner is using are tough critter! I keep a few of them around too!

    Whatever rings ya bell...I've used a common old .22 rifle scope(ancient Weaver) on my 1100 fps .177 for years, haven't had any trouble with it. Maybe I've just been lucky.

    If you can stand the price, buy a Burris A-R scope you will not regret it.
    If it's a price issue go with the Simmons Air rifle scope.......
    Generally the other scopes will not take the abuse.

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

    why even get a scope, when your at the distance that you cant see anymore, the pellet fell and hit the ground a long time ago, and it isnt effective at all, couldnt kill a peice of cardboard with it. I think that you are better off just using regular sights, they are much easier. also, when using a scope, you will have to make ajustments every 20 feet further or closer that you shoot because the ballistics are so bad.. I mean come on, its air power, not firepower. And if your shooting at one distance, that same distance.. at all times then sure you can get a cheap scope but i just think its a waste of money, and time. if you still decide to get one.. your going to be having trouble focusing it. but, any scope will put up and hold up with the "recoil" emitted by an air rifle. whoever told you that is a fool. What i have said was more fact than opinion, now its your choice on what to do. Good luck![8D]

    My Air Arms TX200 Mark III has a Swift 6-18 scope on it. You should buy a scope designed for an air rifle. Good ones cost alot, but will do the job for a lifetime.

    Any good air rifle scope will have provisions on them to allow you to adjust them perfectly down to less than 7 yards.
    I wouldn't want to be hit by a 177 caliber Predator pellet at 100 yards out of my RWS Model 48 Diana, and I'm not made out of cardboard either.
    A scope will make sure you can make accurate shots at most normal ranges where regular sights will not unless you have super eyeballs.
    A regular rifle scope will not hold up in the long run no matter who makes it !!
