Henry Survival .22 - Light Plane

I found this gun on a page (Guns&Ammo 2005 Annual issue, page 11) and I am thinking about picking one up for my son who flies quite a bit over the Sierra Nevadas in his private plane.

Does anyone have this rifle. What do you think of it? It's light, stows anywhere (backpack), behind the seat, etc.

    I have an Ar7 and I have to say I have mixed feelings on it. Mine is not what I would call reliable. The 7 rd mags are ok and usually work although there have been ftf (failure to feed). It is not what I would want to stake my life on. Now I haven't taken it to a gunsmith yet so I have not made any effort to make any improvements. As for the accuracy part, mine is more accurate than I would have thought. If they are new and improved like they say in the ad then they might be worth getting. If not I would say pass them by.

    I just bought one a month ago for my nephew and he and I have put at least a 1000 rounds though it and out of 1000 rounds it has jammed up like 30 times but besides that I have had no problems. They are really fun to shoot and you can store them just about any where.

    I have a couple of AR-7s, an original Armalite and the later version from Charter Arms. The Armalite is a much better put together gun with supperior fit and finish but the Charter Arms manages to fuction just about as well. Neither rifle is well suited for anything other than a survival situation as they are rather awkward, have poor sights and accuracy is so so. For emergency use in a light plane or boat they are fine (which is their intended use) but for any other types of shooting-- including just plinking-- you'd be better served with a Marlin or Ruger.

    I have a similar Marlin 70P-SS. It feeds fine but isn't a nail driver! Didn't the original Armalite float?

    I remember seeing at a gun show a stainless 410/22 mag over/under with a thumb trigger that seemed a lot more "efficient" than the Henry. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

    Yep - I do believe it floated. Thanks for tha imput - I think I'll pick uone up and test'er out myself. I can always give it to a grandkid if it's not what I'm lookin

    I have had a few ar-7s they are OK
    Yes they did float
    db you are thinking about the springfield
    never shot one but I think its a good option

    I owned an original Armalite AR-7 for years. While it functioned reliably, accuracy was inferior to, for example, a Ruger 22LR automatic target pistol with IER scope mounted. I suspect its lack of foreend as the source of inaccuracy.

    Were one seeking a compact, accurate, reliable 22RF, something similar to the Ruger is probably a better choice -- so long as you don't land where such guns are forbidden.

    If a universal solution is sought, a Savage M24 of some sort would appear to be a place to look.

    Henry has made some improvements and for the price they work great for a stowable emergency firearm. The jeep clubs around here seem to like them for their water proof storage, compact size, and they are just handy to have stowed away under the seat.

    You could always go with the Springfield M6 scout. It is a .22 an .410 OU that will never ftf. It does fold in half but it dosent store quite as cool as the AR7. I have had one for years and love it. Here is a cool link to it http://www.oldjimbo.com/survival/v-shrake/m6.html

    I would get a Ruger 1022 with a folding stock or a Walther Bullpup. Both of these are more reliable and mor accurate than the Henry Survival rifle. I would even schoose a good hand gun to the Henry. My 2 cents [8D]
