.44 Mag or .45 Long Colt?

But If Not
O.K.
So, whats better for whitetail deer?

    If you don't do your own reloading and rely on factory ammo then I'd say .44mag.

    They are both great cartridges and I doubt that any deer shot at a reasonable range could tell the difference. So lets go a different direction, are you into history? If you have any want to do any of the cowboy shoots then there's a good reason to go with the 45colt even if it is somewhat slower then the 44mag. If you reload and are using modern handgun/rifle the 45colt can be loaded in a +P to close that gap somewhat. Personally when I made this choice I went with the 44mag even though I do reload my own.

    If you relaod and you have a strong handgun the 45lc will out perform the 44mag. If you do not hand load there are alot more choices in 44mag than there are in 45lc. [8D]

    It's already been said, but I'll repeat as reinforcement ...
    ... if you don't handload, stick w/ the 44mag.

    Or you could save your nickles for the new .460 S&W Magnumr which, in addition to the new .460 Mag. also chambers the .454 Casull AND the .45 Colt. Lots of options in one package...around a grand in street price. [8D]

    I've got a .44 Mag. S&W PC (killed my first deer with it just before Christmas) and I love it. Deer walked about 20 steps and fell. But I'm really drooling over this new piece...and scheming to come up with the cash. [;)]

    45lc will do any thing the 44mag can do and it put a bigger hole in things [:D]

    Im partial to old guns and cartridges.Since 1873 the 45 Colt has been around and has a perfect record for doing what was asked of it. On the other hand the 44 mag has proved itself time and time again.You can not go wrong with either of them.Darn,I'm no help at all.As one before said,if you like history choose the 45,if not the 44 will do anything it is called on to do.

    Both will work. I got the 45LC because I prefer single action "cowboy" guns. There is quite a diffence between the standard "cowboy" load and the souped up deer cartridge; you can really feel it!

    Gap ! With all due respect I don't think you can say that handloading makes the .45 LC equal to the .44Mag?!! The .44 is a 39,000 PSI and the 45 is 13,900 PSI I mean, do you have another loading book?? I know a Ruger can take more pressure than a Colt,but then you have the danger of a hot .45LC finding it's way into a 120 year old Peacemaker. That would not be pretty.

    Hickory, I don't think anybody is advocating loading a hot .45lc into an old 1st gen colt. That would be precisely what you DON'T want to do. But there are frames out there that you can load the .45lc every bit as hot in as any .44mag. Freedom arms makes some very sturdy revolvers that you can handload just about anything in.

    Maybe a factor to help you decide is to look at the gun mfg. of each cal. and their performance? Stay Safe..............................
