Hello the Savage 1899 is the same rifle as the 99. Let me ask you this, when you had it out last year in the rain did you wipe it down or take it apart and clean it? I would take it apaprt, see if there is any rust, and give it a good cleaning. As for buffing, don't do it. If its accurate and smooth enough, doning any work might decrese the value.

I would suggest cleaning and oiling it and never letting it go. A great round to shoot with and great for bringing new shooters to the game without scaring them away (or worse, ruining them) with recoil from a bigger rifle.

We have the second amendment so that all the rest are secure....UNK>

Hello natlou, at one time the reciever had a blue finish if its completely gone your down to bare metal,( probably has a dull gray look ) as the others have said a real good cleaning an a good oil is all you need. GREAT OLD GUN ENJOY!

If you can't run with the BIG DOGS stay on the porch!!

Clean it well, oil it lovingly, keeping the oil out of the wood, don't buff, and don't ever get rid of it!
