What cal. is best for deer?
What cal. should i get for my deer hunting rifle? .243, .270, 30-06 or 7mm mag. This is for all around hunting long range and short.

That is an unanswerable question. Most any caliber correctly applied will properly harvest a deer. If you are only shooting to 100yds or so, then the 30-06 and 7mm mag are somewhat overpowred IMO.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Any will work. The majority of deer are taken under 200 Shot placement is more the key in my book. I shoot the 30.06 my daughter the .243 both do the job well

Westlund, all the cartridges you listed are excellent Deer hunting rounds. The question is what is your shooting experience? If you are a beginning gunner start out with something in the lighter recoil dept like the 243. I myself shoot a 30/06 for deer, elk, antelope, bear, sheep, goats and antelope. My 30/06 is a light gun so it kicks hard, not real fun to practice with so I have lighter caliber guns that I also shoot.

If you are going to stick with just one cartridge, then the 30-06 is by far the best choice. If you were inclined to own two hunting rifles, then you would be best served with a .243 and a 7MM Mag.

the .270 with is the ideal round for whitetail hunting. Its packs plenty of punnh and shoots flat and accurate. You cannot go wrong with this round and you will not be let down if this is the one you pick.

I think for an overall deer gun , the .308 would be awfully hard to beat. There may be calibers that shoot faster and flatter, and may sound fancier, but for what you described as what you're looking for, what could be more versatile, and what other cartridge, other than another good old 30 caliber offers such a wide range of bullets to do such a wide range of things. 0 -
7mm08 does it all with exceptionally negligible kick, made me a better shooter! 0 -
I agree that the 7-08 is hard to beat if deer are the largest game you hunt. With it's light recoil and flat shooting it's great from chucks to deer. It is a very accurate round.

the best all around is the 30-06 hands down but the BEST of the BEST is the 280 [:D] 0 -
I personally prefer the .257 Roberts myself.
If down the road you ever decide to hunt other animals you can move up to bigger animals with it where the .243 won't go. I've killed many deer with both, and both work very well. The reason I like and lean toward the .257 is it knocks them down where the .243 didn't. It is not as powerful as the 30-06 (which would be my choice if you wanted a definative "one gun does all". Each choice has advantages and disadvantages. The 30-06 is not economical nor as fun to shoot varmints with (not as fun say as a .222, .223 or the 'Ultimate'.220 Swift).
I also personally think no should own just one. Most anything from the .243 cal up through the 340 class will do an outstanding job if you practice to hit your mark. -good luck with your choice.
