Convert 270 Win to 270 Weatherby????

I have a JC Higgins 270 with 22 in barrel and FN Mauser action. It has a really nice custom stock that is a bit heavy. How much work would it take a good smithy to rechamer etc. Is the 22 inch bbl to short for the 270 WM? I've been thinking about this for a few years. First year in many that I actually get a tax refund[8D]

    Hey Bill, or son. It's not just a rechamber but the bolt face would need to be opened up as well and possibly some magazine/ follower work to get it to feed right. The 22" barrel would work but Weatherby high velocity numbers are built around the 24" and 26" barrels, you may want to sell that one to buy your Weatherby or just keep it and use it for what it is. Or consider a 270 Ackley improved? no work other than a ream job on the chamber.

    While the job would be easier than an action with an enclosed bolt face; changing the FN action to short magnum requires some machining to the bolt face and the rails/magazine. The real shortcoming to the whole operation is that the 22" barrel is about the minimum that you'd want in a 270Win; Increasing the powder area will gain a few feet per second by going to a Wby case, but you'll get a lot more muzzle blast and jet-effect recoil. I would recommend against the change over.

    I don't think there would be a whole lot of ballistic advantage to the conversion. What do you want to use it for? Hunting? Plinking? What size game do you hunt? I've done several 30/06 to 300WbyMag conversions with various barrel lengths with no problems. My advice to you is that if you want to do it, just get'er done. If you have a regular gunsmith that you are friendly with and can get a good price, just have him do the chamber, bolt face, and head-space. The magazine and follower can be done yourself to save some $$ and maybe learn a little something along the way. Either way, it's your rifle; so do what you want regardless of others' criticism, and HAVE FUN!!!
