i just inherited a S&W 38 special model 60....its an older gun....was just wonderin about how much its worth

    The s&w has model 64,60,65 all come in .38 special with 3 inch barrels

    Nice purchase! My book "The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" describes the 3" square but version on page 124. The next page has a photo of this version. It sort of looks like a "kit gun".

    Thanks for the input.It is a square butt and really fits well in your hand,actually traded a 200.00 high point straight across for it. Thanks again.

    I have seen many of these model 36 with 3" barrel. They used to be quite common. I have one that even has adjustable sights on it, and yes it is a model 36.

    I have a model 36-8 that has a 3" heavy barrel and a round butt. Great little revolver. The 3" Chiefs were developed at the request of a firearms instructor at NYPD for use by female officers and plain clothes brass that didn't want to lug around a model 10 all day.

    The advantage of the 3 inch barrel is that you can get a full (case length) ejector stroke to clear the cylinder, where with the shorter barrel lengths you don't and sometimes a couple cases will not fall clear of the cylinder. This can be a bit of a problem if your trying to speed load.

    "J" frames have always been popular as off-duty and backup pieces as well as with plain clothes (back in the day).

    As for the one comment about adjustable sights ... yes they were made, just not many of them, and when you come across one it commands a pretty good price.
