.300 mag
My question is .300 mag to large of cal for deer hunting? I want a gun for elk hunting too.

I assume you mean the .300 Winchester mag, .30 caliber bullets are fine for deer, the cartridge is OK for both deer and elk. Bad shot placement is no excuse for buying a "bigger gun" 0 -
The 300 Win Mag can be loaded down with 125gr bullets for prairie dogs, coyotes and skunks; or loaded up with 220gr Partitions or Barnes solids for anything on the continent (including Greyhounds[}:)]).
It does deliver a fairly sharp recoil impulse, but with practice; you can manage it.

Of course, a full-power .300 Magnum (either Winchester or H&H) is overpowered for deer, but there's no reason you can't load it down to .308 Winchester specs.....or even down to .30-.30 specs if you wish. 0 -
NO - 300 WM works great on all North American game - just hit'm in a vital spot. 0 -
So long as you use the right bullet, there is really no such thing as over-gunned. Of course, when you start getting up over .358 or .375 caliber, bullet construction becomes too tough for smaller game ( for example, even with the lighter 250 grainers, my .375 Ultra will not open up in a deer-sized animal). But in .30 cal, the variety of projectiles is suitable for anything from praire rats to cape buffalo.

I use a BAR 300 WIn. Mag. and shoot 220 grain Silvertips (they are one of the few that shot well with my gun). It is my favorite rifle.. I have 3 of them...LOL
