Firearms/Valuables Storage Room
The ole safe is packed, and I am considering building a small room that will be fire-proof and secure for my firearms and valuables. Looking for suggestions and ideas on the proper construction of such a room. Any helpful links will be greatful.

I've thought about this before and the simplest method I could come up with was to use a couple layers of 5/8ths sheet rock on the interior of an existing room, this should get you a good enuf firewall for the room if you put a couple layers of 5/8ths on the back of the door.
If you want it secure, line the floor and ceiling with 1/8th inch or thicker sheet metal before (have to drill thru it to mount the rock) or after you put the rock up, for the door buy a industrial exterior door and line the back of it with 2 layers of 5/8ths drywall.
You could get more elaborate then that, but 1/8th inch sheet metal with 2 layers of 5/8ths drywall, will get you a fairly secure room and a 2 hour fire wall.0 -
For the door check out Brownings Security Door. This door looks just like a noramal six panel or plain door. On the opening side it has 11 locking bolts just like a safe. It is very impressive. I was just reading on it in there catalog. You can also look at it on their website. Hope that helps with one part of a great room. Remember bigger is better, extra room extra guns. 0 -
My gun room is not fire proof, but it's pretty secure. It is a 10'x10' spare room, but the walls are reinforced with 1/2" steel bars every 4". The door is of similar construction, with 4 locking lugs. The handle for the lugs is secured by 2 deadbolts mounted to the back side (you can reach through to unlock, but drilling would be almost impossible). I'm sure if someone wanted in bad enough, the could get through-but not without a torch or sawzall. And it would take some time. Remembering that my 70 pound husky will be on their a$$ the whole time, too.

Saw an article once about building room with walls made out of firebrick, like what they use in fire places. Reinforced with rebar or steel pipe running verticly thru the holes that are in the firebrick.

An alternative for the 1/8" plate is the same thickness of expanded metal sheet. Lighter and still tough to get through. I believe it costs less, too.
If someone is planning on going through the wall, floor or ceiling of a framed house they probably won't be equipped for anything like this.
Seems to me that, for the cost involved, another safe in a larger size would be a viable option. Better fire protection, too, should the fire be enough to bring the whole house down.
