Remington 788

I have a picture of my dad from 1973 holding an antelope and the rifle he shot it with. He wrote on the picture that the antelope was shot with a 6mm. The rifle he is holding looks exactly like a Remington 788 except it looks like it has a stainlees(or stainless color)bolt and trigger gaurd. The clip is black or is bluing like on a regular rifle as I know 778s to be and the barrel is also the bluing as on a regular rifle. The wood on the rifle has a blond colored finish.

Did Remington 788s ever come with a stainless or stainless colored bolt and trigger gaurd?

    I have a Remington 788 in 22-250. From what I read Remington quit making the less expensive 788 to sell more expensive 700's. The 788 was and is a very accurate rifle. I can attest to the rifle's accuracy as my 22-250 is a TACKDRIVER. With the proper handloads it easily shoots sub moa groups. At some point I am going to shoot the barrel out of this gun. Has anybody heard of anybody making custom guns off of this action? or rebarreling a 788? Is that possible due to the way the barrel/action was manufactured?

    It's possible to rebarrel them without a problem. I understand the barrels are the same as the 700's, 16 tpi, same barrel diameter. I would check with a gunsmith but I think they are perfectly do-able and worth doing.

    The big thing about 788's is, keep the pressures well within SAAMI limits on the bigger cases. The bolt handle is silver-soldered on and has been known to bust off when smacked to loosen a stuck casing. Once it's been silver soldered it can never be welded right. The solder turns to slag inside the weld. You can silver solder it again though.
    That would seem like a more expensive process to me than stamp forging like most of the rest of the bolts.

    I load for a friend in 22-250 for a 788 and use 36 gr. of 4895 behind a 55 gr. Hdy V-max. Not as hot as it could be but good never the less. -Good luck

    The Remington 788 is perfectly suitable for re-barreling and there are even some synthetic stock designs being made. New bolts are available from www.wisnersinc.com at a premium price but if you need a new bolt...

    Now, to keep this straight, the thread tenon for the Remington 788 is 1.00" x 20 TPI so it is not like the Remington 700 tenon which is 1.062" x 16 TPI.

    They are excellent rifles, just don't go for the absolute top end loads.

    I have one in 222 that isn't the prettiest rifle I own, but it damn sure shoots well.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    I had a 788 and broke the bolt handle off.I gave it to my brother that is a machinist and he used a special welder at his shop and made it good or better than new.

    I had a 788 in 22-250 that I had rebarreled with a Shilen. They even had a contour that matched the original perfectly. Be careful with the bolt handle, it comes off when abused.

    Hey nononsense, do you know where I can find a synthetic stock for my Rem. 788. Also does any one know where I can find a spare magazine for the 22-250. I have seen magazines for 788's in every caliber other than 22-250.
