Shipping a firearm

I just sold my first firearm through Gunbroker. I am in Mesa, Arizona and the buyer is in Massachusettes. I thought the shipping would be somewhere around $30.00. I just got quotes from UPS and FedEx that are around $55.00. Needless to say the buyer is very unhappy and feels that I padded the cost to get more for the gun. These quotes were based on roughly a 5lb package and shipping priority overnight as stated by both carriers for firearms.I had taken the firearm and accessories to the UPS Store and had them give me the quote. The only thing I hadn't done was box everything in a package yet. The buyer says that everbody ships guns and does not delare them as firearms, they just package them and ship them normally. I guess 2 day instead of overnight. Is this normal practice? In my mind I need to disclose anything to do with firearms in this day and age. Please give me some feedback on this. Thanks for all your replies.

    I've read many posts concerning this topic. But there has never been an answer to the question of: What is the penalty for not telling your shipper that there is a firearm in the box?

    federal law says you can ship a firearm to a FFL , gunsmith or company , shotguns or rifles can be shiped by mail, ups or fedex, handguns from a private party like yourself can only be shipped UPS or FEDEX and they require that you use their next day air service ( try to find their cheapest one , usually the one that del. in the afternoon ) AMMO CAN NOT be ship with the firearm

    now there is a twist , you need to check with the receiving FFL to see if they will accept from a private party because they don't have too if they don't want to ..

    one last thing make sure you package it very well ,use a hard case if possible , or at least 2 boxes and lots of packing

    and try not to make it look like a gun , don't put things on the box like Fred Gun Shop , instead put Fred real name and the gun shops address and make sure you require an adult signature

    In addition, you need to know that FEDEX & UPS will accept firearms only at a company customer service counter, not a "store" or "packing center". And, you need to declare it as "firearm for repair", as they won't accept a firearm that they know you have sold.

    Here in Maine any UPS Agent that I've dealt with will except firearms.I think it varies according to your location.[:)]

    I'm not sure about FedEx, but UPS's stated policy is that they will only accept a "sold" firearm for shipment from a licensed individual. This includes the C&R license.

    You are not restricted to FedEx or UPS for handguns, the law states that you must use a common carrier. You can not use US Postal Service.
