Bolt or Semi?

Which do you think is better bolt action rifles or semi auto for hunting deer. I have herd that semi auto are not very accutrate for long range is this true?

    I prefer a bolt action for several reasons: typically they are the most accurate, can be lighter in weight and bolts are in my opinion more reliable. When it comes to a hunting rifle keep it simple and reliable.

    As I am a mchinist, my preference is for the autoloader. There is something about just being able to touch teh trigger to fire a round that appeals to me. As for the difference in accuracy, and at hunting ranges, a fairly well tuned auto will only be off about 1/2 MOA from the equivalent bolt action.

    I stopped hunting some years ago, and around here it was shotgun slugs for deer then. I carried a pump and hunted with a left hander who carried a right hand bolt Mossberg. Not about bolt, pump or auto here, it's about the difference between spraying lead or getting the job done with one shot and not having to incise around gratutituous wounds or take a deer that died in terror or one that didn't know what hit him.

    It's about confidence, hunt with a rifle you know will do what you want it to. The instant backup is great in an auto, but, at least in theory, you shouldn't need it.

    Go with the bolt action, unless you can afford an Browning BAR. I believe that it all boils down to personal prefrence. Which ever one appeals to you the most. As stated earlier, at hunting ranges with a good semi-auto it'll be really hard to tell that there is an accuracy difference. If your that worried about then get a bolt action, and don't worry about it.

    We have little mule deer around here so it doesn't much matter. I've used both lever action and bolt actions - never semi-autos. I've never had to shoot much farther than 100 Yds. anyway, so it probably wouldn't matter.RemFinished1.jpg

    Once you go BOLT you won't go back.... Okay I changed the saying a bit.

    My dad shoots a Remington Semi auto and usually has problems every couple years with Jamming. Most of it is that he doesn't get all the gunk out of it while cleaning. I have two Remington 700 bolt actions rifles one in 7mm and the other in 270. Both shoot great and they are easy to clean. If you make your first shot count when hunting you will only need one bullet. On the other hand if you are "Spray and Pray" kind of guy then maybe you will like the semi-autos. My buddy shoots a Browning BAR in .270 and likes it a lot.

    bolt........a semi auto is going to be as accurate as you need it to be for most field applications but they're a bit heavier...both on the shoulder and the wallet

    imay not know it all.....but at least I know that!
