What gun should I get?
I have less than $500 and i want a good deer hunting rifle. I have been looking and i found 4 i liked, which one should i get? Winchester model 70 Super Shadow.

I have around $450 to spend on a deer gun.i want at gun that i can buy ammo for and not spend a lot. These are some of the ones i have been counsidering.

I have the Rem. 700 in .25-'06 caliber. I love it--flat shooting and accurate, mild recoil. Good for anything up to (and maybe including) elk. Can't go wrong with Remington.0 -
Of your choices, I would take the 700 adl. The 710 is not near the quality. Another option if you want to go cheaper look at the new england arms break action. I bought my eight yr. old daughter one for deer in .243 . She shoots 1 1/2" groups @ 100yds with factory ammo.

If I had exactly $500 to spend I would look for a used Savage in 30/06 or 270 for $250 then spend $200 on a Leupold 3x9 Rifleman scope and have a little change left for a sling, scope covers,and bullets.
Or look for a used Win M70....I happen to like the 3 position safety.0 -
Find yourself a used Model 70 chambered for 30-06... you will never regret it[^]

What ranges are you going to be shooting from? Is there a lot of brush in the area? Some things make a difference. I use my Win model 94 30/30 a lot now days because its lighter, I'm not trying to make a mile long shot, and it does well through brush. It was a great price and the lever action is pretty cool. From your list though, I would go with the model 70. I have one of those as well and never had a problem. 0 -
Delete the Remington 710 complety, add Savage 110 (or other variant).
Any of the then list would do great, the Howa and Savage being the most gun for the dollar. The Rem. 700's and Winchester have more
cult following, but generally, won't get the job done any better.0 -
I think the Savage gives you the best bang for your buck these days..
My brother has a Savage 110 in 270 Win (before the accutrigger came about), syn. stock, shoots like a dream, lightweight too!

Definitely not the 710. That's just a cheap and poor imitation of what Remington did with the 788, except the 788 shot so well, that Remington finally dropped it so they wouldn't lose any more sales to the 700. I would definitely go with the 700ADL, or you could buy a good used 700ADL on gunbroker with a good scope already on it, of which there are many to be found. 0 -

Let me throw a new one at you since I have been reading your posts. I recently received (for Christmas) a 25 WSSM. in Ultimate Shadow. It has the same ballistics as the 25-06. I have reloaded for it already and verified it with chronograph. The cost of the rifle here in MN was $469.00. I prefer the model 70 to the Rem 700 as it has a better safety system, is every bit as accurate, holds it's value every bit as well(if not better).
I would also look at a Savage 110 Package. In fact for the money it is about the best out there. The scope (cheap-Bushnell) is little more than just an aiming device compared to the many better scopes out there, but you can upgrade down the road.
Definately! do not go with the 710's. They've already had recalls on them. The barrel is heat pressed in...not a good solid mechanical arrangement. Especially, if any heat were to come into play the barrel can (and has)loosen.

Here is my two cents worth.
Ruger M77 stainless would be my first choice but it will put you at the high end of your budget. To get the most bang (no pun intended) for your buck, check out the Savage packages available. Savage rifles come pillar bedded and have a scope that is fair but can stand an upgrade which will be easy to do since you will have money available from your budget amount. Savage has gotten a bad rap from things done in previous years to keep the cost of their rifles down. They have learned from their mistakes and for the last 3 to 4 years have produced some of the most accurate out-of-the-box rifles available at a really reasonable price. I have a Savage 111 in 7mm Rem Mag that came as a kit for $369.99 at Dick's. Synthetic stock, all metal clip, cheap sling and mid-range scope that has been upgraded. The thing is a tack driver and something I can use on anything in the woods of Wisconsin.0
