    Best way would be to get a 3/4 or 7/8 channel cutter, to remove the majority of the wood, than finish with your dowel/sandpaper (by hand).
    If your good at building jigs and have a router you could use a ball nose cutter of approxamitly the right diameter also.

    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    It would seem as if 40 grit ( I dont think a brick is that coarse) is a bit much for what you need to do.
    Your cheapest way out would be to use the 1 inch dowel you talk about
    with 150 grit sand paper wrapped once around it. Then just work it back and forth to cut the channe bigger. A set of deep well sockets could be of help also, just pick the closest size and have at it..
    Dont forget to coat the insides of the channel with a finish when your done, otherwise it will absorb moisture into it.

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.
