I just went down this road and am no expert on the matter but ill give you my 2c. What i ended up doing is buying a 700vs .308 it has a great stock (HS) right out of the box i adjusted the trigger down to a crisp 2.5lbs and was going to re barrel but after shooting the thing i found keeping everything stock works great and i can shoot tight groops as is. In the future i will put a hart bbl with a quicker turn to throw the fat slugs. So far im happy and think it was money well spent.

If your purpose is to build a rilfe from a 700rem action,..then YES, buy an action or a cheap donor rifle. The 700 ADL is cheaper and the action is slightly stiffer. You can buy one NIB for $400, then sell the barrel and stock for $100 and have only $300 in your donor action.

I have gone both routes and both work.

The answer to you question lies in what you want regarding the stock. If a factory stock would work, or be the piece of wood with which you could customize to fit your desires, then finding a used 700, having the action and stock customized and a new barrel fitted would probably be the most economical way to go. If ou want an entirely different piece of wood or kevlar, etc for the stock, then get an action, have it barreled, fitted with a stock. That would be a completely custom rifle and would be very nice, but would also be considerably more expensive.

Darn it JustC how do you figure a ADL action is slightly stiffer than a BDL action ????
They look like the same thing when they are stripped down. Am I missing something here ?

Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

I though the same thing,..but have read posts by several gunsmiths who actually prefer the ADL action to start a pure benchrest rifle. I seem to recall something about the bottom of the action and the magazine set-up. it could be all false,..but I just for whatever reason recall something about stiffness or vibrational uniformity advantage or something to that affect. I just use the first 700 action that comes along for an acceptable price, ADL, BDL tomato tomahhhto[:D]
