Advise for scope mounting please
I have always been a revolver man so to speak. Anyhow I thought I would give some bench rest long distance a shot. I purchased a couple of Remington 700's. I bought a .308 for myself and a .223 for the wife. You see all these bore sighters, tools for lapping rings {I never even heard of this}, etc. There's 4 screws for the base and 4 screws for the rings. Is it not just as simple as putting them in place? Would not the scope be lined up correctly, or very close? My eyes are not as good as they used to be and I'm a little shakey at 55 from pain meds I take. I do not want to strip or put scratches on any thing. I do not mind paying for a gun smith to do it for me. I just never realized so much seems to be involved or is this just overblown. Anyones advise and/or help would be appreciated. I have 2 Leupolds and the bases and rings for both QRW.

Just assemble them onto the rifle and be sure everything is lined up and solid. I have been mounting scopes for 35 years and winning matches with no problems. If you were shooting 500 to 1000 yard distances then you might want to go the route of lapping the rings etc. 0 -
what Ronald said plus make sure you degreese the theads with rubbing alcohol then put a drop of non harding lock tite in each hole for the base screws that go in the receiver ,, do NOT put any lock tite on the ring screws ,,, tighting every thing up real good using a good fitting screw driver ,you can tighten the base screws about as tight as you can get them by hand with your screw driver , the ring screw are tight but don't over do them just use one hand on the screw driver when you are tighting them up 0 -
As base mounting and tightening the rings has been covered, the only thing left is installing the rings onto the bases. You need a "special" tool for this task. The tool consists of a (assuming your not going with a 30mm scope) 12" long piece of 1" wood dowel or broomstick. You use the tool to twist the front ring into it's slot, aligning it to be as close to inline with the rear ring as close as possiable. You can "lap" the rings with a piece of 400 grit wrapped around the dowel. The idea is to eliminate any sharp edge that may crimp the scope tube. Receivers, bases and rings all have tolerances, that can stack up on you.
Bore sighting can be done easly enough by knocking the primer out of a piece of fired brass, inserting it into the chamber, and than aligning the barrel and crosshair to the same point at 25yd. Use the side to side adjustment in the rear scope base to get it close, save the scopes internal adjustment range for fine tunning.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

Once you've gone through all the steps described by the other posts, except tightening down the scope ring screws, you (and your wife) will each want to comfortably wrap yourselves around your rifles in "the most comfortable position" you will be firing from on the bench. With the scope rings screws started but loose, adjust the eye relief for each rifle to where as you sit at the bench with rifles on bags and pads so that very comfortably you see the full scope picture. Check a couple times to make sure you aren't straining with your position. Then, gently bring each screwdown to firmness. Check the gaps between upper and lower rings and bring them down evenly, to about 18-24 inch pounds. Since it is a pain to use a torque wrench to do this take the little Torx wrench that comes with Leupold rings and bases and from when the screw firms down it will turn about 30 Deg. more (1/3 of 1/4 of a turn) and that should give you about the approximate torque you need. -good luck.
