rem. 7400 "dust cover"

there is a plastic "dust cover" on the outside of the rem. 7400 auto rifle's bolt. it's cracked. do i really need this "dust cover"? looks like the barrels must removed to replace this item. thanks for any input.

    Apparently these things crack and break a lot. Most people don't replace it and it doesn't seem to affect the rifles funtion at all.

    If the cover is missing completely, the outer "cam pin" will most likely fall out. There are two pins that keep the bolt head attached to the bolt carrier.

    It will function fine without the dust cover but the action will collect all kinds of debris. The 7400 does not have an outer cam pin; the operating handle functions as the cam and is held in place by a retaining pin that will not fall out. And yes, the barrel and action must be removed for replacement of the dust cover.

    The 7600 has an outer cam pin that might fall out if the dust cover is missing.

    I HAVE THESE COVERS AND HAVE BEEN PUTTING THEM IN FOR YEARS ONL THE 740/742/7400 SERIES WITHOUT REMOVING THE BARRELS. YOU PULL THE BOLT BACK A BIT , INSERT HALF OF THE COVER,THEN VERY CAREFULLY PUSH THE OTHER HALF IN. PRESTO! IT IS DONE. ALFONSE

    hello again;

    plastic cover $3, local gunsmith wanting $69.95 plus tax to replace the "dust cover". not able to understand just how alfonse replaced this item with out taking the rifle apart. alfone, tried to e-mail you for further instruction on replaceemnt of part, but not able to get the system to let me contact you. thanks.
