Can anyone give me a suggestive retail price for the NEF sidekick, and huntsman muzzleloaders?
Even if someone could tell me which is the "more expensive" gun, that would be a big help. I cant locate the retail prices of these two firearms.

Below is a link for the Huntsman prices from Walmart. Walmart prices are usually about the lowest around if you don't mind waiting 1-2 weeks for the order to come in. They have their whole special order catelouge on-line now. Looks like the Huntsman is priced at $128.00. As for the "side-kick" I don't know of any H&R or NEF product by that name. There's the Pardner, Topper, Tracker, Handi-rifle, Snake Charmer, Sportster, etc., but I don't know of a "side-kick." Just take a look through the Walmart on-line categlogue and that should give you an idea of prices for all NEF/H&R products. Remember though, if you buy somewhere other than Wal-mart you might expect to see the prices 25% higher.
As to NEF/H&R quality, they are great guns. For the money they can't be beat! Good luck.

Okay, I was wrong. There is a side-kick. Below is a review on it with some mention on pricing towards the bottom of the article. You may want to check some other forums too. Graybeard Outdoors (http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/) has an entire forum for NEF/H&R products and there are some threads discussing the Sidekick. One advantage the Sidekick reportedly has over the Huntsman is that it is magnum capable (150 grains of powder) whereas the Huntsman can only take 100 grains. However, the Huntsman receiver can accept additional replacement barrels whereas the Sidekick receiver cannot. Reported retail on the Sidekick is from $160-$230 so it appears the Huntsman would be cheaper. Again, good luck.

The Huntsman will accept other types of barrels. Mine came with a 12 guage accessory barrel. It is considered a firearm and requires a FFl to buy or the standard yellow form if you buy from your neighborhood gun store. It would be easier to sell the Huntsman as a blackpowder gun since that would allow direct purchase, and no yellow form at the store if you buy retail. So..... the sidekick was introduced. It is solely a blackpowder arm and no accesory barrels will fit, therefore it is not considered a firearm. I believe both will take up to 150 grains of powder, even though 100 grains is plenty for hunting. I've taken a large 8 pointer with mine and couldn't ask for a better blackpowder gun. Wholesale prices run about $125 on either. Walmart prices will be hard to beat. The Huntsman with an extra barrel should be around $150-$200.

This is not true, at least as far as the Huntsman goes. You can only use 100 grains of BP in the huntsman!!!

Is the powder situation even an issue for me?
I would be using it for shots no longer than 50 yards(maybe 75). I would be hunting deer with it.
I guess there is something attractive about having a gun in which you could swap out barrels-but first and foremost I am looking for a rifle to hunt a special antlerless season-so the barrel issue isnt on top of my priority list.

I have been unable to verify that it is safe to use 150 grain loads of pyrodex powder in a NEF Huntsman. It would be unwise to try this unless the factory gave their OK. I still think that a safe load for a Sidekick and a Huntsman should be the same. By the way, don't use the same weights of loose powder to equal the pellets. The burn rate is different. I would not exceed 100 grains of blackpowder or loose Pyrodex in either a Huntsman or a Sidekick, just to be safe. That's all that is needed anyway. Many, many muzzleloaders use less than 100 grains with great satisfaction. I will continue to look for load data on the Huntsman and will post any factory recommendations I find. 0 -
At that range on deer you would have no need for more than 100 grains of powder. My Traditions side-lock takes up to 100 but I find it to be much more accurate around 80 grains. Shot an 8 point buck this Fall at about 65 yds with just a patched round ball and he didn't walk another step. I doubt 150 grains of powder would have made him any deader. 0 -
DBV is correct,,,bigger{more} isn't always better,,,80 grains with powerbelts drops em at 100 yds,,,but then again shot placement is the key,,experiment and find what works for you !! but i leave the 150 grains to the guys doing the commercials,,,,

I shoot a Flintlock, never load it more than 85 grains-works great.
What is a good projectile to shoot out of these guns? Someone mentioned powerbelts-I have a bunch of them I bought on clearance, never used them cause I think they are illegal during the flintlock season. Do they come in different weights? If so, what is a good size for my application?
I realize I am going to have to do some experimenting on my own, just looking for some ideas.

I use saboted 300 grain lead hollowpoints over 90 grains of Pyrodex powder. It has worked well on 2 bucks for me. Groups about 3" at 100 yards with a scope. 0
