odd Shaped Group...WHY????
MY Springfield 1903A3 had an odd tendancy. It will group some loads horizontally. I shot a 10 shot group with cast bullets at 100 yards today. There was no wind. The group measured 5/8 of an inch high and 2 and 1/4 inches long...[?] From time to time with other loads using jacketed bullets I have seen this tendancy.
Does any experts out there have any ideas as to why this is happening?? Any help is appreciated.

No....But it is the only centerfire rifle out of 6 that I have and shoot that groups like that.0 -
Hello if you have the the REDFIELD type mounts that have 2 screws on opposite sides make sure they are not loose."praise the HARDBALL gun" 0 -

as rusty has said.ignition problems. the load is not in tune with the barrel. barrel harmonics so to speak. the bullets are not leaving the barrel at the vibration . i know i am not being at all to clear but this is what the problem is. perhaps someone with a broader vocabulary can help me out here.i would try a different powder first . then look at the primers. hope this helps0 -
Question;
Does the group walk or is it a dispersed pattern.
Is this a two groove barrel with the lands top and bottom.
Does it only do this with some loads with the same bullet.
If the group walks, I would suspect a bad face on the receiver.
As stated elsewhere, this could very well be a pressure wave thing.

Could also be a slight defect in the cast bullet, i.e. mould, that lines up differntly in your handloads, meaning it pulls to one side or the other, though that wouldn't be my first inclination. I agree, parallax first, then barrel harmonics, then the bullet.

I done some checking on the benchrest forum.They say the stringing could be the result of several factors.It could be a weak firing pin,barell touching end of forearm,erratic ignition,using too slow of powder.They recommend trying different loads,free floating your barell,and checking your firing pin.Hope this helps.Al[?] 0 -

sorry about that I should have asked more questions to start with. So, time to T/S. First, no wind, no bullet movement. Other rifles on same day not shooting "wind pattern?"
Second, other rifles not producing groups like that so not your aiming/shooting techniques, they seem good. By this I mean do you come down on the sights the EXACT same way every time with each and every rifle? I'm assuming this rifle has a scope, so have you checked paralax. If not do you know how to adjust it out?
Third, you mentioned other loads, does the rifle do this with other loads too some weights yes some not? how long do you take to shoot a group and do you let the barrel get warm? What I'm getting at here is you might have a micro-inclusion in the steel of your barrel. The only two ways of finding out that I know are to eddy current the barrel (common NDT practice) or cut it open in some way (not effective unless you got right on the inclusion). Try using one of the 'known' offending loads but wait until the barrel is completely cooled off between shots. Then, try that same load again as rapidly as possible.
Other than that it could be firing pin, anyting out of the ordinary with the cases? primer indent too shallow? or deep? Does powder residue come down one side of the case more than the other?
Lots of little things to check with this that may help get the 'odd shaped group to straighten out.

Do you use any wind flags?what is the # pull of the trigger?what kind of bag or rest system do you use?How is the head spacing of the gun?The first thing i would try is to (if the case head shows its safe enough)increas to charge a couple tenths.Then if that doesnt seem to change then i would get a different weight or make bullet and/or primers.At a houndred yards a heavy trigger will move the impact quite a ways.It sounds like you and your gun are already pretty accurate with 5/8 horizontal.So i'd bet its in the trigger pull or the barell harmonics.
