remington 7400

has anyone heard of gas block cracking on 7400? what could cause and can gun be fixed. gun is 30-06 delux

    i just picked one of these up in a GB auction and upon closer inspection noticed it had no sling posts. well i found the front adapter, but would like to know if you have to drill the holes for the rear posts. it is the synthetic model, 270 caliber. i haven't gotten the gun yet, just saw it in the pictures.

    YES THIS IS VERT COMMON. ALL SHELLS EXPAND WHEN FIRED. A DIRTY/ROUGH/RUSTY CHAMBER, BROKEN/WEAK EXTRACTOR, DIRTY GAS ORFICE/BALL WILL ALL CAUSE THIS PROBLEM (ALSO CHEAP AMMO). I'VE HAD TO POLISH A LOT OF CHAMBERS ON THESE. BARRELS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE FROM REMINGTON OR A REMINGTON REPAIR STATION.

    I AGREE WITH MIKE , USUALLY RESULTING FROM DIRTY CHAMBER [ LT RUST OR FOULING ] . REMINGTON NOW INCLUDES A CHAMBER CLEANING BRUSH WITH THE 7400 . IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE GET ONE AND USE IT . WRAPPING A SMALL PIECE OF FINE STEEL WOOL AROUND THE BRUSH AND ADD A FEW DROPS OF BREAK-FREE WILL HELP REMOVE RUST OR FOULING .

    Like I said before, my gun is kept very clean, the orifix ball has been changed 2 and the extractor as been looked at. The gun smith advised me that the barrel had expanded more than usual. He measure the carthridge before shooting the gun then after. The conclusion is the carthridge expands behond normal measurements. He also tried three different brands of shells.

    I've had this gun for 20 years, and it's only done this in the last 2 years. That's why I ask if anyone else has heard of this problem.

    i'd also check the orfice hole to make sure it isn't fouled with copper or carbon. i don't have my service manual here but each caliber has it's own hole size. otherwise i'd ship the gun back to remington.

    I was in Firearm Service center a few months back and there was a guy in there having the same problem. FSC has a master gunsmith and the guy with the gun had FSC work on the gun three different times. When I was in they were boxing up the gun and sending it back to Remington.
