S&W Mdl. 28-2 pre or post '74??
I need a replacement rear sight assy for my Model 28-2. However not sure if it is a pre or post 1974 manufacture. My understanding is that in '74 S&W standardized the location of the screw location.
Serial# on this is N265637.

Smith began the "N" prefix in 1969. Your gun was made about 75' or 76' according the Smith book.
You should be able to buy a complete rear sight set-up from a gun shop, but I would consult with the dealer before you buy to make sure it will fit.
Bag up your gun and take it with you to make sure the screw hole is in the correct place before you make the purchase.

Is the front of the sight rounded or squared. Most likely it is the newer sight, but, your close enough to the change date that it could be an older one ...
If you do not have the rear sight, it'd be best to take it to a gunsmith. That way you won't be gambling on getting the right sight.
However, when they have them in stock you can get Millet sights through Mid-way for around $35 plus shipping. Numrich is around $50 or a little above. Smith would probably be in the $60-70 range. But the latter would be basically a dead certain fit as you could give them Model and Serial Number and they can pin it down.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
A friend showed me a Brownells catalog today.That is where I remembered about the 1974 changes on the hole location. Here is a pic of it. Took it to the range today and it shot great. Just picked it up yesterday at a gun show. I think I didn't do too bad for 275 out the door.

What's the matter with the sight that's on it? [:)] 0 -
It doesn't show in the picture. But apparently therevolver was dropped and landed on the rear sight. The top of the sight leaf is bent and cracked also unable to adjust it for windage.
