AR-15 Compatibility

With all of the different AR-15 uppers and lowers out there, how is one to know which ones will fit together? Is every brand the exact same thing with a different logo on it? Is there a difference between rifle/pistol? Thanks in advance.

    Michael....... Most uppers and lowers made today are what is referred to as "mil spec" meaning made to military specifications.

    Colt made guns with a larger front pin than other guns for some time. These uppers with the large front pin could be made to fit lowers with small pin holes by using a special adaptor pin.

    Some of the better AR "type" rifles made today are DPMS, Armalite, Bushmaster. Pretty much everyone now makes their rifles to "mil spec" so that there is somewhat a standardization of parts and recievers, both uppers and lowers.

    The pistol versions of the AR are built with the same action but dont have a shoulder stock and have a shorter buffer system, and are allowed to have shorter barrels than normally allowed as they are considered handguns and must be "registered" as such.

    So is it physically impossible to switch rifle uppers with pistol lowers and pistol uppers with rifle lowers?

    If you put a pistol upper on a rifle lower it would be illegal as you would then have a short barreled rifle.

    If you put a rifle upper on a pistol lower, you would then have a very long barreled handgun. This is legally ok, but I dont know why you would want to do it.

    Its not impossible, its just a matter of legality. Since the lower is the serial numbered reciever, it depends on how the gun was originally registered. How the gun was registered dictates what configuration it can be in.

    All will fit. You can put a 11-1/2 inch pistol upper on an ar15 and you will only lose 300 fps, more or less,than a 20inch barrel. depending on your powder. BUT you will either have to put the 51/2" flash hider to make it a legal 16inch barrel,and have it permanently pinned on. or you can find a NFA dealer pay, 200 dollars, and have it registered as a short rifle. With these short barreled rifles, You can literally shoot, with one hand. That is how light they are, even with the HBAR.
    You would be suprised at how compact a weapon you can make with a telescopic, stock. Anyhow, be careful, and be LEGAL..Click on this link forhttp://www.accuratereloading.com/223sb.html
