Best value AR 15 for my son
I would like the experts opinion on whch AR 15 clone is the best value, I want to start saving for one for my son for Christmas. Like most people, I'm on a budget and want something as affordably priced as possible but also something of acceptable quality. You all recommended I get him a Walther P22 for his first pistol this Christmas and he absolutely loves it at age 12. Thank you, as always, experts for your advice.

Consider putting one together with a reciever and one of the various kits that are on the market. Rock River, Model One, DPMS and several others have a wide variety of new (not surplus) parts kits. You can pick from a standard A2, or flatop or super varmint gun. There's also a lot of high quaility recievers. It's not a difficult job and if you have basic tools (hammer, punch set screw driver) and skills you'll have a lot of fun. The hard stuff, like headspacing the bolt, installing the gas tube, etc are done for you at the factory.. If you're on a tight budget you can buy the receiver, upper and lower parts separately and proceed as the budget allows. There are several good books on the ins and outs of putting one together as well as a lot of information on the internet. I built one with my son several years ago. He had a great time! And really learned how the gun works. 0 -

My son is also 12 and I have been looking too. So far Bushmaster seems to produce a rifle to fit any size body. More importantly to me, I have heard very few complaints. My son can handle an AK74,5.45x39, without any problem, so a .223 is just as controlable for a young one. 0 -
I'm building one right now myself. I bought a DPMS forged stripped lower last month and today ordered a 14.5" M4 SOCOM rifle kit from DSG Arms in Fort Worth. The kit is complete to build a 16" legal M4 clone using a Cavalry Arms complete upper, furniture, a stock wrench and a DPMS lower parts kit. It also comes with a sling and an ergo grip. With this kit you have to have the muzzle device permanently attached to be legal but it comes with a Cav-Comp uninstalled. I upgraded to a Phantom Comp and will have a local gunsmith pin it to be legal.
The lower cost me $169 with tax and the kit with upgraded FH cost $665 with tax and shipping. Since the deal is in state I had to pay taxes. OTW, the base kit costs $575 plus shipping. The only thing it doesn't come with is a magazine but they are $15 for a USGI 30rd just about anywhere.
I have done quite a bit of research on AR15.com and here and Cavalry Arms seems to have quite a good reputation.
In the end I will have about $850 in a chrome lined M4 SOCOM copy. I will have to put some kind of rear sight on it whether it be an open sight or some kind of optic.
You can buy a good forged lower for $100. I was just impatient and paid more since there was only 1 lower available at the gun show.
Then you could buy a complete kit for around 5-600 and have a nice AR for the money. Plus you get to put together part of it yourself which I am looking forward to.0 -

Is this really for real? I'm not very "mechanically-inclined" so this won't work for me, right? Seriously, can it really be this easy? And what about doing a similar deal with a .308 caliber? Is that possible? If I were to do such a thing, would I be wise to take it to a gunsmith to have it "checked out" just to be sure I did everything right before blasting away? [?]0 -
Now, I don't want to put anybody personally on the defensive, but in my ultra-conservative opinion, nobody's child needs an AR-15 until he graduates at least high school, and the U.S. Armed Forces issues him one, and the right headset to go with it.

YES, It is that easy.
Just order the complete lower and complete upper, when they arrive, just push the two pins out of the lower and slid them back through the holes in the upper.
Insert Mag and start firing.
I just ordered three of these for my children. Although they are 6,5 and 1 years old, I will keep them until the time is approriate for them to have them.

I took the short cut & bought a complete upper and complete lower (both completely assembled). Assembly requires pushing out 2 captive takedown pins in the lower, placing upper on lower and closing the takedown pins. See this field stripping link:

This has to be the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time. These guns are investments that will gain in value over time if not not for the mere fact that they can be considered politically incorrect. I wish my father would have bought some IMI Galils, FNC's, yadda yadda yadda... back in the 80's when they were relatively affordable and available. Look at the prices on those guns now!!!
