Mossberg 22 rifle

I have bought an Model 142-A O.F. Mossberg clip feed bolt action rifle.The barrel is marked 22-s-lr. The front of the stock folds down into the vertical position & is made of plastic. It has sling swivels on the left side & a front post site and rear peep site. I can find no serial numbers anywhere on this rifle. Anyone have any ideas on age and value?

    I bought a Mossberg, Model 40, 22 bolt action rifle today. I looked the gun up in the "Bluebook" and it gives a mfg. date of 1933-35. It does not note how many were produced.

    Does anyone have different reference source that might note the production numbers? Also, the "Bluebook" does not give a serial number range. Were these guns marked with a serial number? I don't have the gun yet and I didn't ask the seller if it had a serial number.

    Has the aperture rear sight and hooded front and a 24" barrel. Seller stated that the gun would shoot less than 1" groups at 50 yards, with standard velocity ammo. He also stated that the gun doesn't like the high velocity ammo. Anyone have experience with this gun?

    I have the semi-auto version of the same carbine. The ones with the hinged plastic forends date to the mid 50's. Prior to that the forends were wood.

    Before 1968 there was no legal requirement to serial number longarms. Many manufacturers didn't bother with their inexpensive guns.

    Can't help you with the price. Mine that's a semiauto is supposed to be worth between $125 & $150 in original, excellent condition.

    With all due respect to RACER and Blue Book, The prices listed are nearly DOUBLE what the rifle would bring in my area (southern Ohio). I collect them and would never give those prices. I'd be delighted to sell my extras at those rates.

    Brings back memories, first gun I shot, back in the 50's. I remember counting down a couple birthdays until I was 5 or 6. Mom's Mossberg had the wood forend. Still have the rifle.

    Picked up the tube feed Mossberg auto, the one with the Mannlicher style stock for $25 when I was about 12 from a local guy who had bought a huge lot back then, He had Trapdoor Springfields and Spencer carbines laying all over the living room floor.
