model 92
i have a winchester model 92. i was wondering about how much it would sell for. it is in perfect condition and seems to be able to shoot. i have never shot it. the lever action is smooth and clean. the rifles are still very prominent. and it still has the ring on the side. this gun was in the fight between the settlers and indians for Tarboro,N.C. from Rocky Mount, N.C. i have looked for ammo, only to find it was 45 dollars a box (20) so thats why i never shot it. this is a beautiful gun.

I'm curious why more late model Winchester Mod. 92s are not listed in online auctions like GunBroker? Mostly you see the antiques.

I thought they had pretty much wiped out the Indians in North Carolina by 1892(actually probably by 1792) But there were always pockets of stubborn resistance that needed to be dealt with. 0 -

You probably should post some pictures of this '92. Sounds like a carbine. The '92 was chambered for the following calibers: .25-20, .32-20, .38-40, .44-40, and a very few in .218 Bee. I've had ammo in all these calibers and have never seen it for $45 a box. Perhaps a different store would have it cheaper. 0 -

If your Winchester is marked "MODEL 92", that indicates that it was manufactured sometime after March of 1918 (the serial number on your Model 92 SRC will tell us the approximate year of manufacture).
I, like asa, have never seen a box of twenty cartridges (regardless of which specific cartridge we are talking about) sell for $45... in fact, I don't believe that I have ever seen a box of factory ammo that only contained 20 rounds. Factory 44-40, 38-40, 32-20, and 25-20 ammo has always been sold in 50 round boxes (at least for as long as I can remember).
As for the potential value, it is very important to know which caliber it is, when it was manufactured, if it is a standard SRC (Saddle Ring Carbine), and finally, the graded condition. If you can post pictures of it (or send them to me at Win1885@msn.com), that would help.

this is what it says on it, winchester Model 92 38 WCF. serial # 970500. the stock polish is wonderful. the barrel and other metal parts are still finished quite well. ill get pics soon as i get the camera here. 0 -
My book says made in 1925. Did not know you were still fighting indians in NC that late. Good luck.

The serial number indicates that the date of manufacture is circa 1926 - 1928. I do not believe that it was ever involved in any "fights" between settlers and native indians. I was at the Costa Mesa gunshow early today, and found 38-40 (a.k.a. 38 WCF) for as little as $30 for a 50-round box.
I also strongly suspect that your Model 92 has been refinished, and hopefully, the forth coming pictures will tell us the "rest of the story" (I really like old Paul Harvey).
