300 savage vs the .308

How does the 300 savage compare to the .308 in the same barrel/rifle?I am looking to get one or the other and would like some advice. [8D]

  A smidge less power is all. In the lowest weight bullets it will stay right up with the .308. The .308 will outperform the .300 Savage through the whole bullet spectrum though, so for strictly versatility the .308 would be the better choice.

  Hunting/target/plinking at 250 yards or less most of the time.

  Id go 308, since you will be plinking you can buy surplus ammo cheap for a 7.62. And at the range you intend to shoot the 308 got plenty of power and accuracy.

  The .308win as stated will out preform the 300sav on paper. For most part though at the range and in the field you will never notice the difference. That said, the .308win will always have better prices and selection on the ammo. The 300sav however is available in some great old time guns like the model 99 Savage and such. If a classic gun from the good old days appeals, go for it. If you want a modern bolt rifle, get the .308win.

  Buy the .308, the .300 savage doesn't hold a candle to it.
  Take a good look at the ballistics chart.
  Of course I'm a .308 advocator all the way but I still love
  to hunt somtimes with a 30/30 carrying a peep sight.

  If you did not know what you were shooting you could not tell the difference. The 308 is more available to purchase ammo and I have read the .300 Savage is a little tough to reload due to a short neck.

  The .300 sav is one of my all time favorite cal's. I've got two of them, a 760 pump and a 700 classic. Reloading has never been a problem. Never did like the .308. 30-06 is a much more prefered over the .308. [:)]

  Actually, in the real world, both are quite close. However, the .308, being a more modern cartridge, is more versitile. It's available in more bullet weights and loadings, and is certainly easier to find.
  
  If you go hunting somewhere and run out of ammo, you're unlikely to find .300 Savage at a small gunshop or general store. They'll have plenty of .308.

  When I made a comparison there did not seem to be significant difference in ballistics between the two rounds.
  
  It looks like the biggest difference between these cartridges will have to do with the availablity of ammunition, brass, and firearms.
