What is this Winchester/Western Field rifle?

A coworker gave me this info on her grandfather's rifle. Would someone please give me some info and value.

The rifle is a bolt action possibly tube fed(?) that is marked on the barrel Winchester Western Field Model M842 22s,l,lr. She said that she couldn't find a serial number.

Any info would be helpful.

    According to the cross refernce at www.e-gunparts.com it was made by Mossberg model 346k.

    Prior to the enactment of the 1968 Gun Control Law there was no legal requirement for certain longarms to be serial numbered. Because of this many manufacturers, as a economy measure didn't serial number there inexpensive rifles & shotguns.

    So is this a Mossberg or Winchester? How old would be, within a 10 yr frame, and she said it has been stored in a case and "looks" new. What sort of value, in a general sense?

    My reference notes that the 22 rifle your inquiring about was made by the Mossberg Company in the late 50's.

    Generally inexpensive 22 Caliber Bolt Action Rifles don't bring a lot of money on the resale market. Even in excellent original condition, my 2 cents is that it's value would be between $50 & $150.

    It is a Mossberg 346K. Check the barrel again. I believe it says Western Field, not Winchester Western Field. Western field was an imprint of Montgomery Ward Co. on firearms built for them by a variety of manufacturers. These were usually an economy verison of a model offered by the manufacturer. As such, there is virtually no collector market for such firearms, leaving them in the "Shooter" price range. I would say Rufe-Snow is about on target, though my guess would be $40-$125 depending upon condition. I think there is confusion between Winchester Western (ammo made by Olin, as I remember) and Western Field. There was no Winchester Western Field.

    Thanks all! My coworker is appreciative to at least have some history on it. She does think he bought it a Montgomery Ward.
